It’s been ok for decades. Just ok. - Edit
While it’s comforting that Claire’s has been around for years while other businesses have been pushed out by Yale, Claire’s food is just so uninspired. I’ve hoped it’d get better since 1993. It hasn’t.

Staple in CT - Edit
Claire's is a vegetarian and vegan staple in CT. Everyone knows about it, and even my non-veg friends love coming here.
Read moreMy go-to is the spicy buffalo burrito. Comforting, filling, and really tasty. I love their homemade sour cream.
They have an assortment of vegan desserts that are always changing, but they're hit-or-miss for me. Sometimes they're pretty good, but other times they're heavy and grainy (more often than not). I still get them regardless because I'm a sucker for dessert and keep hoping for the best.
Great location, but can be difficult to park. Expect to walk if you're visiting during peak hours.
Pros: Vegan dessert, Good value, Good location
Cons: Difficult parking

👎🏼 Dessert - Edit
Claire’s was SO busy when we went on a Saturday afternoon, which is a testament to how much people love them!
Read moreThe menu is HUGE, with a plethora of clearly-marked vegan options like risotto, tofu “wings”, salads, and sandwiches.
It was overwhelming because it was so crowded, and we decided to get a couple desserts to go. They have a section of the case that is clearly labeled vegan with plenty of delicious looking desserts. We tried the vegan doughnut and the lemon loaf.
They were both extremely dense and stodgy and just not enjoyable. I didn’t even finish mine. If this is the quality that they let pass in their baked goods, it makes me nervous to try the food.
I’d give it another chance just because it seems so popular, but our first experience was very disappointing.
Pros: Lots of vegan options, clearly marked , Fair prices
Cons: Desserts were just bad 👎🏼

Only one negative! They gave me the wrong dessert once, and I couldn't eat it. Other than that, I LOVE this place! Yum yum, if this place was closer, I'd be here often. Oh, and Claire is a sweetheart!

Home made cooking since 1975 - Edit
Claire's makes their own veggie burgers, desserts and more. Corn chowder soup has the perfect flavor. BBQ veg burger and the CA veg burger were delicious. Don't leave with out having a chocolate lava cake though make sure you ask them to heat it up. And before you leave take with you a Suncookie.

Nice bakery options - Edit
I popped in her quickly recently and tried several options from the bakery goods that were vegan and vegan-GF. All of them were very nice. This is terrific for a college town that is curiously laking in vegan options.

Claire’s - Lots of Vegan Options, Fun Atmosphere! - Edit
Claire’s is a great place to meet, greet & eat. Food is consistently good, tons of vegan options, and a great place to meet your non-vegan friends and introduce them to vegan versions of their favorite comfort foods. The diners are always eclectic and entertaining. Go here.

I’ll go back and try more things - Edit
My first time was underwhelming with a vegan breakfast sandwich. While the size and flavor was adequate the contents were soggy and oily due to sautéed arugula. The tempeh bacon and avocado tasted good but the bread was soaked in oil by the time i was halfway through eating the sandwich. I also got a vegan blueberry lemon coconut cake that was delicious and my overall experience will send me back to try more things from their extensive menu.

Vegetarian restaurant with decent vegan options - Edit
We have been going to Claire’s for years. Their menu is huge. The whole restaurant is vegetarian with some vegan options and other options to modify dishes into being vegan. The portion is always great and the food is consistent. It is a bit pricey but affordable. If I remember correctly I think most of their produce is organic. I remember their vegetarian baled goods as being amazing but their vegan ones are just okay. We haven’t gone in a while, so things may have changed a bit. I wish they had more vegan options!

Lacking flavor but lots of options - Edit
It was nice to have things labeled as vegan. The California burger is delicious (ordered without cheese) but I realized that the flavor comes from the guacamole on top and not from the patty itself. The dessert I had was also really flavorless and bland for the price. I’m not sure why they don’t season their food more... vegan food doesn’t have to be bland. Still, it was nice to know there were some vegan options in new haven. For the prices tho, they need to up their flavor game. Lastly, they have a fruit fly issue - they were swarming me both times I ate there and they were in the old flowers that were sitting around on the tables.

Cons: Bland/lacking flavor, Cleanliness and fruit flies, Too many animal products on the menu still

If you’re veggie and in the New Haven area, this is a MUST GO. There are so many amazing options (menu is really vast), almost everything is made in-house, and the staff is super friendly. I had an absolutely amazing dinner and an incredible dessert. If I lived around here, I’d be a regular for sure.

Claire's - Edit
I've been here many times. The food is amazing, especially the desserts. Although for their lunch meals their portions are huge. If you want to come for a lunch then stick to a half portion size or plan to take some of your meal home if you end up liking it.

Would give another try - Edit
Before going to IKEA, I decided to swing by Claire's for lunch, as I don't make it to New Haven very often. I ordered the spicy buffalo soy chicken burrito wrap sans sour cream and mozzarella (I substituted Daiya) with guacamole. I also had a iced chai tea with coconut milk. The girl who took my order was very patient and knowledgeable about veganism, which was appreciated. I loved the atmosphere and interior of Claire's, as well as the general location. However, I was a little disappointed at the quality of the food for the price. For two people it cost me $30, which isn't that bad considering eating out as a vegan can be expensive; to substitute a vegan option - between the cheese, nondairy milk, and guacamole it was about $10 extra. This total is also without the Lithuanian coffee cake cupcake I had, which I went back for because who doesn't like dessert? The portion of the burrito, I will say, was pretty generous. Also beware, I had overheard that they cook the soy chicken in dairy butter. I don't know if that is true, but just to be safe I would double check.

Cons: Expensive , Wish they offered more vegan desserts

The food was good the first time i visited. I had huevos. the sauce could have been more flavorful and the egg came cooked a little more than I wanted. It was super yummy.
Read moreI came back a second and third time. Had the uevos- was pretty gross and returned it to the kitchen. Cold and soggy chips, egg was hard as a rock. Next time ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich thing. Rubbery and gross. i threw it in the trash.
The restaurant was busy and a little cold twice out of 3 times.
I took a piece of cake to go all three times and should stick only to desserts.

I have been back to this restaurant and wish to remove 2 stars. It seems as though I just hit it on a good day the first time. I am never going back. Cold food, sigh chips and rude service when I asked for a redo.

Good - Edit
Claire's is a nice place with lots of choices. We already had lunch so we decided to just get a little snack of nachos and chili what turned out te be more than we expected - still the price was a little high in my view. It's possible to swap to vegan cheese! The music was classic so somehow matching with the yale atmosphere but the food gave me no high culinary vibes, it was okay, but worth a visit. Not very special though. I liked the individual and authentic location.
