Go to store for years

Choices has been my grocery store of choice for a long time. They have a great selection of vegan friendly products, great produce and healthy food items. Anything not on sale is a little pricey, but the product quality is very good.

Pros: Many vegan products

Cons: Pricey

Good healthy food store

I needed a good supermarket while staying in Vancouver and this was a great option! Just about everything you need and a lot of healthy and organic options.

Cons: A bit expensive

comprehensive store

Large store, some produce is organic, well-stocked deli, nice salad bar by weight, ready-made wraps and hot soups. Store-made hummus in several varieties – I really liked the black olive version. Everything you’d expect in a healthfood store. Friendly staff. Preferred Shopper cards for discounts and collecting points.
Some items seemed pricey; watch for sales and manager's discounts.

Pros: store-made hummus, salad bar

Cons: not vegetarian

Choices Markets Yaletown, Vancouver

When I walked in the door to this place I literally stopped in my tracks and gazed in wonderment at what was afore me, it seemed too good to be true. It turned out that it was too good to be true.

This is a big place with a wide variety of products on offer. It's not a health food shop, it's a big expensive deli that happens to include some health foods among it's stock.

The 1st issue for me is that it is not exclusively vego. This is typified by the substantial butchery section. There are meat products available througout other parts of the shop.

Secondly this isn't a place for a bargain. $4.49 for a litre of soya milk? $3 for a veg samosa? Someone is laughing all the way to the bank.

I went to the sandwich counter and asked if any of the sandwiches were vegan veggie? I was told that none were but if I wanted one could be made consisting of humus and salad. I decided to go for it. The bread was 2 slices of from an every day pre sliced loaf. I was charged $6 for the privilege.

Most useful about this place is the opening hours - 8 am to 11 pm 7 days a week, so could come in handy. It is located in downtown on Richards St.

Overall, very unimpressed.

Pros: Vegan vego friendly, Open long hours

Cons: Not 100% vego, Expensive

Always one thing missing...

I used to live right beside here and shopped frequently. Awesome for fresh produce, save your dollars to buy condiments, pastas and grains, and more generic foods elsewhere. Found it frustrating - there was always ONE ingredient in a recipe that they didn't have in stock, or stopped carrying. Found Urban Fare more convenient for finding *everything* in a recipe at the same price point.

Pros: good fresh, local produce, location

Cons: expensive, frequently out of stock on items

Better than Capers

Choices is a great alternative to the more trendy Capers Community Market (recently acquired by Whole Foods through Capers' parent company Wild Oats). Their prices are often cheaper than those at Capers and their selection of grocery items is better. Choices also runs a rice bakery that produces a number of decent items for gluten-sensitive/intolerant people, though most of these rice good are not vegan. That said, Choices has a better selection of vegan breads and has a less bougois atmosphere than Capers. The West 16th Avenue location in Vancouver is the only place I've yet found Sheese for sale, as well as vegan pies. Overall, Choices is more down-to-earth and comfortable to shop at than Capers.

Pros: Great staff, Good selection of goods, Very Vegan friendly
