Happy tummy, sad tummy - Edit
The closest eatery to our hotel still open at 11pm, my partner and I found ourselves here late one very stormy evening. The menu contains a lot of meat and one vegetarian option, a tom yum hotpot. The owner and her children set it all up for us, coming out with plate after plate of various vegetables and different types of tofu. The tom yum base was fragrant and quite delicious, and alongside the tofu and veggies we were given noodles, a side of fried spring rolls, and fresh chillies and lime. Despite the harsh lighting and solid plastic seats, it was actually a pretty cosy experience with a nice warming soup and the monsoon rains pouring down outside.

We did notice the poor hygiene standards, but in our hungry state and reluctance to venture back out into the torrents, we foolishly took the risk. There was significant dirt and grease marks on the table, hotplate, cutlery, serving utensils, bowls etc. We did our best to wipe things off with the napkins provided and opted for the wrapped chopsticks over the metal cutlery, but it all remained rather insanitary. It’s also worth nothing that they handle raw meat in the kitchen and can’t guarantee there won’t be cross-contamination. Without making any sure claims about the state of their food safety, let’s just say that this was the last proper meal we could stomach for several days. Make of that what you will.

I know the feeling. Ugh 😑 I think eating meat at such a place would be worse. In those moments, I’m even more glad I’m vegan 😅 wonder how the other customers managed. 🤢

Lovely Hotpot - Edit
I was craving hotpot so badly and couldn't find anything on Happy Cow so we started walking around and found this place. On the sign it said they offer vegetarian hotpot so we walked in and asked. The staff doesn't really speak English but understand words like "broth/vegetables/vegan/vegetarian" so basically all the things we needed. The vegetarian hotpot offers only vegan ingredients so we found what we were looking for. We got tofu, noodles, mushrooms, corn and a big plate of greens. The broth was absolutely delicious. You'll also get some chillies, lemon and a special kind of salt to spice it up.
