Food was horrible - Edit
Was disappointed to read my mock general Tso’s may have been real chicken as their Yelp says it’s a vegetarian restaurant so I didn’t specify. Regardless if it was vegan or not the sauce was just sugar…fried crab rangoons were also sweet and far too bready. Restaurant was cluttered and seemed understaffed, I felt bad for ordering bc everyone was working so hard…a lot of improvements needed.

WARNING!
Read moreThey have a vegetarian menu and a meat/fish menu.
The menu items on both have IDENTICAL NAMES!
You must explain to the cashier that you are ordering the vegetarian version and clarify you do not want fish sauce or any other animal in your food.
It can be difficult to get a word in edgewise but be patient.
I've been vegan or vegetarian for 35 years until I came to this place and got a fried rice for lunch. Ended up eating two mouthfuls before I realized.
Then drove all the way back and asked for the correct item.
By the time I left she was convinced it was all my fault and she had taught me the 'correct' way to order.
It's great that they have vegetarian stuff, but for me the correct way to order is to go someplace that isn't hostile to vegetarians. There are many other restaurants to go to!
Pros: its Chinese
Cons: rude staff, takout only, no dine in. , getting meat in my vegetarian order

Rude - Edit
I really wanted China Panda (Sheppard St) after not having any in years because I thought they were closed.
Read moreMan, that lady that owns the restaurant is rude as [censored]. I didn't even order food. I should have listened to the reviews about how awful she is to everyone. It's as if she's pissed that you had the audacity to think you could order food from there. Also accused me of wanting things for free. "Maybe when YOU own a restaurant YOU can give out things for FREE!". Woah, woah, woah. I was simply asking if you could substitute something. All you had to say was "No we don't do that." They have 3.7 stars for a very good reason. I actually got kind of sad, because I was super looking forward to ordering from them because of all of their great vegetarian options.

Not a vegan or vegetarian place - Edit
Totally disappointed with this place. We went there and there are limited veg options and the food is not great as well. Plus it seems they don’t care to respond. We wanted to dine it but they just packed all our food and we had to sit there and eat like a food court setup.

China Panda, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul.
Read moreYes, they are terse. No, the sesame mock beef isn't vegan. Wouldn't change a thing. Despite their many options, I find myself returning to the general Tso's tofu again and again because they do it as well as anyone. Vegetable wontons Hunan style are also a must, I can't recall a time I went to CP and didn't get them. Peter Chang and Cheng Du are wonderfully "authentic" in their own right, but I think there's much to be said for American Cantonese style Chinese food done right. China Panda forever.
Pros: Excellent food, Big portions, Brusque service (this is good)

Would give 5 stars - Edit
I will not hear of this China Panda slander. If all you need in life is a heaping portion of greasy chinese takeout, then this is the place for you. When ordering on the phone just be matter of fact and firm with your order, the owner seems to appreciate that. I’m not a big fan of the mock chicken, because it’s a little to hard for my teeth, but any of the tofu dishes are amazing! I usually get the mock ham fried rice, wonton soup, spring rolls, and sesame tofu for my partner and I to split.

Best option for mock meat - Edit
China Panda may not be the absolute best or the most consistent but it’s literally your only option for 1)quick 2)cheap 3)mock meat in RVA. If you’ve been spoiled by places like Loving Hut in NoVa or other big cities you’re not gonna be impressed. Prepare your mind that you will not fall in love with any dish, prepare your stomach for the amount of greasy cheap and affordable carbs you are about to consume. The only consistently pleasant dish I’ve found is the mock chicken fried rice, it’s easy on the stomach and you get so much for so little $$$. The mock chicken dishes are either pretty ok or super chewy to the point of your jaw popping, it’s always a gamble. It’s pretty darn okay if you want more options than tofu. Mock beef is the best choice if you are ok w/eggs.

Edited Review: Beware of egg batter on mock beef dishes, but still the best Chinese Food in town - Edit
I left a review for China Panda a couple of years ago after learning that the mock orange beef I had been ordering for years was battered in egg. I didn't order from China Panda for a long time after that, but I have recently started ordering from China Panda again after hearing assurances from multiple people, including China Panda employees, that the only mock meats that are battered in egg are the two mock beef dishes which have been pointed out by other reviewers. China Panda really is the best Vegan Chinese option in Richmond. The mock teriyaki chicken is my go-to dish, but it's really all pretty good. Just avoid the mock beef dishes, as pointed out by other reviewers.

AMAZING - Edit
I don't know what stick is up the other reviewer's butts. The owner is Chinese, they obviously are raised in a different culture which isn't the fake smiley gimme a tip culture Americans are used to. Just give your order, get your food and go. Don't complicate things with small talk when someone isn't a native English speaker then complain how their tones come off. I've been coming here for years. The owner recognizes me. I've got a smile twice, don't take it personal, just take your dang food.
Read moreOK now that that's out of the way- Let's tackle the "egg batter" comments. I've never had an issue with their food and I'm sensitive to eggs, especially after not having them for two years. They recently have had an American, English native employee and he's marked the few items on the menu that aren't vegan. He even said none of the sauces contain honey, it's just high heat caramelized sugars mostly. You can go to Tan A and buy mock meats that are clearly marked VEGAN, they're premade, pre-battered and pre-fried. I have no reason to believe that for $10 you'd get an entire tray of hand made, hand breaded and fried vegan chicken. I trust the employee. They clearly have signs all over that say "VEGAN" and "VEGETARIAN", which is where a ton of their business comes from. Half their menu is vegan. Don't discount them just because it looks like every other chinese takeout place, you're not sitting down to a white table cloth.
I think the food is fantastic. The scallion pancakes, fried wontons and general Tsos mock chicken are incredible. Everything I've tried I've loved, with the exception of the mock beef stir frys, just because I personally don't like mock beef. I always try to get something new and always come back to the mock chickens.
Definitely try the vegan panda special fried rice!! Mock chicken and AMAZING mock ham!
Pros: HUGE menu, knowledgable of veganism, cheap for quantity
Cons: Closed Tuesdays, Not fully vegan so I can't give 5 stars

I've eaten at vegetarian Chinese restaurants and omnivore Chinese that serve vegetarian dishes. I've never encountered this kind of rude service where they blame you for their screw ups. Or get mad if you ask any questions. Chinese people are not rude. They are just more direct about some things Westerners are not. Chinese people are actually a lot of fun to hang out with.

I'd be careful ordering from here. We don't know what kind of sauces are being used or cross contamination is happening, if some of the mock meat is mixed with regular meat or what is going on and I really don't trust this place!! Make your own judgment but don't expect any real information to be handed out to you.
And the cooks and workers obviously don't care enough.
I am going to find somewhere I can take some of the meal I had today to see if it is real meat, if there is a way to test that. And contact whoever is associated with the FDA and food inspection to investigate this store ASAP.
Easiest thing is just to eat at home!!
Be safe, not sorry.
Truly the most disappointing and awful experience.
