24/7 Very basic and authentic street food! - Edit
Forget the Walking Street (Go there of course for touristy things) but for authentic street food, this is the place. Sit on plastic chairs and metal tables. Simple foods - most are soup based with 1-2 rice dishes.
Read moreSo fast - you order and in like 1-2 min food is ready and at your table.
Watch scooters and buses and cars go by while eating. It is a wild atmosphere!
Food is insanely cheap: 35K for a meal (US$ 1.50 /£1.10). Sugarcane juice is 10k (US$0.40 / £0.40).
And it’s good. We had 2 meals: rice, mushroom, tofu and the other was glass noodle with meat (all vegan).
Nice guys - one guy spoke English well but otherwise just point at the menu.
Open 24 hours a day which is great if you have jet lag or are hungry at night.
For authentic experience, recommended!

Fully packed VG place - Edit
The restaurant is a typical Vietnamese place where lots of locals are going. It was fully packed at our arrival but we didn’t need to wait long before we got brought to our table, which we shared with another couple.
Read moreThey have a quite decent menu, but unfortunately most of what we chose was out of stock, while it was only just a little after 8pm.
The service was quite fast, and the Beef Stew was ok, but not wahouuu.
However, the spicy sauces on the table were awesome!

Open 24/7 - Edit
Only closes for Vietnamese holidays (TET, Independence Day etc). All meals are 30k and are tasty. The young staff can speak English and are friendly. If they aren’t there you will always be given the English menu and can point at the dishes you want. The curry is my favourite of all but it often runs out early although on my last visit there was some left at 3.30am. Definitely worth a visit if you are hungry during the night.

Best chay food in Saigon - Edit
I lived just around the corner from this place for 2 years and went there almost every day - it is SO GOOD. Cheap, delicious and filling - what’s not to love? Their bun cha gio is AMAZING! They have an English menu now too. Also it stays open much later than 10!

cheap & good - Edit
Simple eatery with a great deal of choices and cheap price (25k). I lived near by so it was my go to place for lunch. The staff and owner got to know me and were always nice with me. It is run by the same family for 15 years. They are humble and nice.
Read moreTip: if you want a bigger portion, just say the name of the dish and add TO LON, they will understand. It means big size, you will add 5/6k, and it will be consistent.
Portions are good for the price. It can get crowded at peak hours. They will then add additional tables. Simple place so don't expect service or a fancy atmosphere.
Listing mention it closing at 10pm but I have seen it open until midnight.

Bustling local spot - Edit
Update:
Read moreAfter sampling as many restaurants as I could in my short time in Saigon, I’ve decided that Chi Cu is my favorite one.
I came back again for breakfast on my last day in Saigon. I’ve been looking for vegan Bo Kho (rich beef stew) but couldn’t find it anywhere else, so I was happy to find out that Chi Cu had it on their menu.
After searching far and wide for this dish, I was not disappointed. It was fantastic. The broth was rich, with a perfect balance of sour, sweet, and savory. It had some coarsely ground black pepper, which added some nice taste. I especially liked the fried thin tofu skin—it added a really nice crispy yet chewy texture and some fattiness to the dish.
———
This is a no-frills, hole-in-the-wall eatery that attracts lots of locals. I stopped by for dinner around 6pm on a Thursday evening. The place was packed—and with good reason. The prices are the cheapest I’ve seen in Saigon, with noodle soups going for 25k a bowl. I went with the Bun Bo Hue, which was delicious. The broth was delicate yet flavorful, and the aroma of the herbs came through nicely. One of the coolest things about this place is that you get a real local experience. I was posted to a small, cramped table with two men who were midway through their meal (which was part of the fun) and I enjoyed my dinner while taking in the sights and sounds of a bustling restaurant. I was the only non-Vietnamese there, so it felt like I was party to a little-known secret.
