Will miss their vegan comfort food - Edit
CHAMPS HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THEY'RE CLOSING FOREVER ON JANUARY 29, 2023 AND I AM HEARTBROKEN.
Read moreThe French toast, tofu scramble, sausage were delicious.
The addition of mac and cheese to a chick'n sandwich sounded strange but was really good.
Because the atmosphere is so friendly we were also able to admire our neighbors' meals, and hope to return quickly for the chick'n and waffles.
We hadn't been since the move from a prior location. They do now accept credit cards and reservations.

Pros: Vegan versions of old favorites , Friendly atmosphere
Cons: A few items aren't offered until after 4:30 pm.

@theNumberOfTheBeast disappointment is understandable, but we still have lots of vegan options in New York, and even Brooklyn including the comfort food of the brand new Slutty Vegan

Yeah, but SV is owned by a fake vegan profiteer who is partnered to a man who literally sells tortured, mutilated, dismembered, baby bovines. I can't support her. 😥😥😥

What is Champs? I read in Brooklyn Vegan that their reason for closing was "too many reasons" someone else told me it was SH accusations. 🤷♀️🤷♀️

I believe champs owners are still running two other venues in BK. Do you mean they've re-opened a new one calling it Champs again? I'm happy to support Ro's with or without the Reuben and Milkshake machine.

I haven't been yet and don't know the owner's identity. But it's not called Champs.

Great spot - Edit
Great diner-style venue. We had coffee (free refill), breakfast sandwich (bacon and egg) and the breakfast slam with pancakes, hash and just egg instead of tofu scramble. The pancakes and hash were a little undercooked in my opinion but maybe American hash usually has a little bite to it? It all tasted nice and the service was great.

Mixed experience - Edit
I got the mac and cheese and the Reuben sandwich. The Reuben was great! The mac and cheese, not so much. It was basically mac with oil and salt, and did not taste cheesy at all... I couldn't even finish it. Not sure why it gets so many rave reviews.

Cons: Solos can only sit at the bar on weekends , Food is hit or miss

Vegan Denny’s but better - Edit
I got an order of the breakfast scramble: pancakes, tofu scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and hash browns and was BLOWN away with how tasty this was. If I had someone else with me, would’ve loved to try the Chicken N Waffles or any of the other things they have on the menu. Very friendly staff, you won’t be disappointed!

Best Reuben I’ve ever had! - Edit
I saw Champs on Instagram so long ago and have waited years to try it, and oh boy it definitely lives up to the hype! We got a fried chicken sandwich with Champs sauce, a Reuben, and a cookie dough milkshake and everything was so so so good. Definitely the best vegan food I’ve had in NYC so far.

Good but inconsistent - Edit
I like this place. Some dishes are better than others. It often has a long wait and when it’s busy that’s when the inconsistency comes into play so aim for off-hours if possible.

Hit or miss - Edit
Choose carefully, because their dishes are either hit or miss. We had the burger, which was really good, the breakfast mash, which was mostly so bland I only made it through about a quarter of it, and the banana cream milkshake, which was amaaazing! I honestly wouldn’t return, but I’ll give it a 4 star because of the milkshake and the varied menu. I’m sure that there’s more on there than must be as good as the burger.

Soy Sensitivity beware - Edit
Champs is the answer to your need for a greasy spoon if you’re vegan. The shakes are tasty, the breakfast foods are delicious, and the mozzarella sticks are second to none; however, if you have a sensitivity to soy whatsoever, pay very special attention to the menu and stick to the rivers and lakes you are used to. Standouts include: mozz sticks, sandwiches, breakfast foods, and the atmosphere inside of Champs! Worth the trek!

Classic American-fare - Edit
I love Champs Diner! Usually the best vegan spots are in Manhattan, so it's great that Brooklyn has something worth visiting as well.
Read moreTheir jalapeno poppers are my favorite. A little spicy, crispy, tangy, and bursting with ooey-gooey cheese.
I've tried their cranberry chik'n wrap and Nashville chik'n sandwich and they're both amazing. Wish they both had more greens for some more texture and to balance out the big flavors from the sauces.
My boyfriend says their fries smell just like McDonald's fries, which is a plus. They're really good and crispy too.
Pricy, but it's understandable for the location. Adorable interior and friendly staff.
Pros: Tons of options
Cons: Pricy

Great Service, Great Food, Great Ambiance - Edit
I ordered the steak and eggs with a side of kale and I was so impressed with everything. My omnivorous dad got the buffalo cauliflower, jalapeño poppers, and a coffee with soy milk and loved everything. He gets buffalo cauli at every vegan restaurant I drag him to, and he said it was the best he’d ever have. The food all came out in like 10 minutes. The diner itself was cute with throwback music. They need sharper knives for the steak that cut like a real steak! Edit: I went back and got the breakfast slam and it was soooo good. The pancakes it came with were the best part (and I got cookie dough on top of them). My friend got the cheesesteak and he loved it too!

Good comfort food but small portions and unpleasant staff - Edit
Undoubtly a place to go when you crave some comfort food. But the prices are quite high as to the portion size ( /- 20$ for a burger or chickn waffle in not centric area..?).
Read moreWe get out meals very quickly but got kicked out soon too, literally 15 minutes after receiving the meal. I understand that the place gets crowdy and there exists a 75 minute policy, but it was strange, since there were people workung with their laptops or just chatting. Quite unfair for me..

Amazing selection - Edit
Best Mac N Cheese I’ve ever had! Also had the Breakfast Slam. The pancakes were incredible but the rest of the meal left me a bit underwhelmed. The chicken sandwiches, especially the buffalo sauce one (I forget the names), were also very, very good. Such an incredible selection of options, I look forward to coming back. The service was unfortunately not great. Our server seemed confused most of the time and messed up our order. We came during off hours and it felt like we were bothering her. But, oh well. We all have our days. I still give it 4 stars because a fully dedicated vegan diner is virtually nonexistent and most of what I had was delicious.
