Fantastic experience in Takayama - Edit
Great food! We explained that we were vegetarians and they were able to recreate meals on the menu without meat or fish. Owners are very friendly and speak good English.

OK food but lovely staff - Edit
This Chinese restaurant does not really cater to the vegan crowd so their veg options aren't /amazing/ but they still hit the spot and were pretty tasty and satisfying. Staff are super kind and accommodating though and make coming here worth it 😊
Read moreDishes we ordered (as vegans) were the chop suey (prawn removed), vegetable soup, sesame dumplings, and mapodofou with tofu.

Lovely owners - very accommodating - Edit
Although this restaurant serves meat, they have some delicious tofu dishes and their fried rice is vegetarian (not vegan as it contains egg) and all the food is cooked in front of you. The main vegetable dish featured eggplant, but the chef-owner came up apologetically to show us the eggplant he’d just cut was bad inside and wanted to know what else we would like. He came up with a new mixed veg dish on the spot and it was great. They also understood about no fish in the soup stock - not always easy in Japan.
Read moreThe real icing on top was the other half of the owner-couple, who was also super helpful and friendly. She is a master of origami and makes gorgeous paper sculptures for patrons while they eat, if she is not busy in the kitchen. She saw our 9 yr-old daughter was interested in making origami too, so gave her a delightful lesson after the meal and they both made some colourful paper pieces of art.
It was also reasonably priced - about 4,000 yen for the three of us. English spoken was minimal - it helped that we had our food-related phrases printed out in Japanese to show them.
