Okay iced coffee

Me & GC decided to try this place out as we kept forgetting about it having vegan options.

We both got an iced coffee it was okay, the milk they used was flahavans oat milk which isn't the best for drinks.

The main reason for the coffee only being okay is that I think they use weak coffee and I generally like very strong coffee so it tasted cheap to me.

They also charge .50c for the oat milk which Is an annoying practice that places have, but at about €5 for an iced coffee isn't bad.

The coffee was larger than I expected and had a good ratio of ice so you didn't feel like it was gone on two sips.

They also had a vegan lemon and blueberry cake but we didn't try it.

The Cafe is above a bookshop with nice skylight windows and a part of it looks over the bookshop part below.

The staff seemed nice and it was a very relaxed place, I would go again just to try the cake.

Me & GC decided to pop in for a coffee and a cake, I got a latte with oat milk and vanilla syrup, the coffee was better this time and the cake was actually quite nice, it was lemon and blueberry and wasn't Heavy surprisingly.

Okay but coffee could be better

I got an iced oat latte, but didn't have my phone with me to take photos. The size of the latte was brilliant, especially for €4.50 (including the plant milk charge of €0.50), and it wasn't 60% ice like in some places, but it didn't taste great. I'm not sure if it's because of the oat milk they use (Flahavan's), or if they're just using the regular version of the milk and not the barista version, or if the coffee itself is just not great quality, but it was very tangy. It reminded me of the coffee I used to make when I first went vegan and used to use soy milk in my coffee, where it just makes the coffee taste kind of diluted rather than milky. They also had a vegan lemon and blueberry cake, which I didn't try, but I plan on going back again at some point to try a coffee with a different milk (they also have almond and soy) so I will try a cake then, and hopefully update this review with photos and whether the issue with the coffee was the type of milk or not.

Staff were nice.

The atmosphere was nice. There was music playing but it wasn't very loud so you could still have a conversation.

Large yarn section at the end.

Some interesting photos on the wall of Castlebar from 100 years ago.

A good selection of books downstairs. Every week they have a book of the week which is €2. They also have some vegan cookbooks - I saw the Veganuary and Cornucopia books, there may be more. Plenty of recommendations from staff hung on the walls as well. There is also a big focus on local authors, and even a section for books that are written in the Irish language.

Update: I came back. I got another iced latte but with almond milk and some caramel syrup. I also tried some of Purp's oat latte with vanilla. I got a piece of vegan blueberry and lemon cake. This iced latte was definitely better than the last, but still not great. It tasted like there was a load of syrup in it, it was overpowering. I couldn't taste any syrup in Purp's latte, and I didn't think their latte was great either, it had the same issues as the iced one I got a few weeks ago. The cake was delicious, but for almost €4 a piece it is very expensive as each piece is tiny. Unfortunately I can't bring myself to increase my rating, and I feel that I'm being generous with 3 stars.
