We tried the ackee - Edit
Finally we were able to try the ackee in a vegan dish and it was wonderful! The portions are really big, as a side dish there are different kinds of potatoes, plantains and something like a dumpling. Very filling and delicious! loved it!

This was one of my favorite spots to eat in all of Jamaica! I had the ackee and curry chunks, both were great. Good atmosphere, had some nice books on Ital living etc. Grabbed a calabash bowl to bring home.

BEST food on our trip! - Edit
I have been plant based, no oil for 1 year and find it challenging when dining out. I opted to take a cruise with friends who follow the same lifestyle and have the same challenge. When our ship docked in Ocho Rios, we were thinking we might find this cuisine called "Ital". Our driver never tried it and was wearing. We offered to buy his lunch if he tasted it. Upon reaching the top of the stairs to the restaurant, we were ELATED to see the phrase "Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food" on the storefront. Upon entering, the shelves are stocked w organic whole grains, organic spices, organic lotions, etc. We knew we struck gold! And while we couldn't understand what was listed on the menu and had no clue what we were about to eat other than the food would be whole plant based, no oil goodness, we asked for "whatever the man before us selected" because he had a HUGE pile of tasty looking food!

More importantly, I consider myself a good cook and a foodie so to rave this highly, it MUST be good! (Rarely do I take the time to fill out a survey, either. This restaurant is THAT good.)
Ever since walking out of their restaurant, I have been on the hunt for Ital. No way can this restaurant be replaced. I highly recommend and cannot wait to return!

Read moreWe couldn't find it initially because it is not in the same place shown on Google maps. As you stand on D'acosta drive facing the Champion Plaza walk to your left (East) on the same side of the street as the Champion Plaza. Cross over the bridge/culvert and then turn right at the Nestle sign. Calabash Ital is on the top floor of the shopping center that is set at the back of the parking lot.

I came here during my stay in Ocho Rios. I asked the chef if he recommended any menu items and he gave me a combination plate for $550. Loved all of it, sat on the deck watching the street below while I ate. I also got a small soy ice cream to eat on the walk back to my accommodation.
