Pancakes Galore

What a find! Not a vegan cafe but probably 90% of their options can be made vegan and gluten free. I had gluten free vegan pancakes with vegan sausage & maple syrup! Best I’ve had and to be able to eat this type of food with non vegan family was brilliant! Will be going back to sample more vegan treats.. it’s not a place to go if you’re on a diet but a great place to go for a treat.

Pros: Loads of vegan options, Good portion sizes , Not too pricey

Pancake heaven

If I could give it 5 stars I would! Such a great selection of vegan and gluten free options, most of the food on their menu can be veganised and there is so much choice, I was actually overwhelmed! In the end I went for the Vegan Stack, which was pancakes, sausages and maple syrup. I was chatting to one of the waiters as well and he said that all the vegan food was cooked and prepared separately which is always a bonus ⭐️ Cannot wait to go back!

Great vegan pancakes

There is so much choice for vegans in this little cafe and the pancakes are delicious. We went for the savoury options with vegan sausages, crispy onions, vegan cheese and chilli sauce. Really good and very filling. The portions are huge! Can’t wait to go back and try something sweet.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Tasty food , Big portions

Vegan-friendly, could easily be friendlier!

There is a large selection on the menu that is accidentally vegan and there is always a faithful vegan menu on a sandwich board outside the cafe. I like how this locally owned business is always very up front about their vegan options, not just pandering to Veganuary.

As an American, I can vouch the pancakes are American style--I think they have updated the recipe as the first time I visited a few years ago, they were definitely not American (tasted like they had yeast in them??). I tried the french toast on my 2nd visit. Very tasty--portion was too big for me to finish, and drowning in maple syrup (would be nice to be able to pour your own syrup). No cinnamon which is, in the US, a requirement for french toast. Came with English sausages (vegan) which, again, is not done in the US. Instead, we eat our pancakes with (veganized) bacon, sausage patties, and/or scrambled tofu. And if you put baked beans on an American's breakfast plate, they'd look at you like you were from outer space. The Anglo-American mashup is fine, but I just find it a bit misleading the cafe is called an American pancake house. It is a British breakfast cafe that happens to offer pancakes.

My friends ordered the veggie fryup which , unfortunately, is not vegan--it has to be customized and not all the waitstaff was versed in how to do that (we got one waiter that had ideas, and another that didn't). The option we were offered was to replace the fried eggs with more potatoes--it was too much potato. I ordered the cheesy vegan potatos with my french toast and vegan sausages to try and create my own fry up--too much potato (and I was jealous of the baked beans my friends received). The portions of the fryups were big as well, only one of my friends finished his plate.

Someone ordered a smoothie which I got to taste--it was fresh ingredients and comes in a nice mason jar mug. Would recommend.

The atmosphere is nice--historic building dating back hundreds of years with connections to the cathedral that sits behind it. Apparently, the pilgrim ship to the US was planned there and also there is a lingering monk spirit. The decor is 60s.

My only wishes: the fry up should be VEGAN! It would be so easy to do! Instead of eggs, make it vegan bacon or sauteed mushrooms or spinach. Also, if dogs were allowed inside, I would be there way more. Instead, I end up going down the street to some of the many local cafes that are dog friendly.

Pros: Very vegan friendly, Historic building, Locally-owned, centrally located, has wifi

Cons: No vegan fry-up/main meal, Not dog-friendly, Not really an American cafe, more British

Pancakes and lots of other vegan brunch options!

We often visit Chambers when we fancy a good, hearty breakfast. They have a good range of vegan options, with pancakes being a favourite!

Great stop before visiting the Cathedral

This colorful cafe with a friendly staff offers clearly marked vegan dishes, and others are noted where they can be veganized.
