Serves meat, vegan options available. Seafood restaurant with vegan choices. Menu includes vegan banana blossom fish and chips with mushy peas, chips or salad. Open Mon-Sun 12:00-20:30.
Bycatch for vegans - no actual vegan option! - Edit
Their only option was a "vegan" Tofish and Chips - which I was excited for. On the menu it marked it as vegan only.
My partner and I were immensely disappointed when our server informed us that it was "not actually vegan" and that it was cooked in the same fryer as the fish - which for me, I was not comfortable with (although I appreciate the server's honesty).
I accept that for some who are "plant-based" or just like to dip their toe into the world of animal-free eating this is fine (and I certainly won't begrudge people for choosing that option). However, as someone who is vegan (an ethical philosophy on excluding and limiting the exploitation in my day-to-day life) this was not it and made me feel immensely uncomfortable (despite recognising this is a hotly contested issue in the vegan community). Even from my vegetarian days I would not order a "veggie" dish if it had been cooked in animal fat/oil. It just again proves how misunderstood the term 'vegan' is and I think By The Sea need to do their research on the term! I would not have had so much an issue if they labelled clearly on their menu that the "plant-based" fish and chips were cooked in the same fryer - that way each customer can decide before entering the restaurant and ordering!
Instead we left and got Tofish and Chips along the seafront at Rum and Crab Shack (who confirmed that the vegan/veggie meals were cooked in a separate fryer!)
Idk if it was just the one I had, but the banana blossom fish was really bitter. The batter and chips were good though. I'd recommend getting sauce at least
They use a single fryer and fry the banana blossom fish and chips along with fish and other meats. We discovered this a few months back, confirmed this time around that that is still the case.
This restaurant offers Vegan fish and chips.
The vegan fish is made out of banana blossom which was difficult to eat without cutting up with a sharp knife (so not ideal to eat with takeaway cutlery). The batter was really tasty but the Bana blossom was flavourless, and quite wet, and wasn't as convincing as previous tofu 'fish' that I have had elsewhere. I regret not having the tartare sauce, which may have enhanced the flavour.
The chips were really good and proper chip shop style.
