Great Ethiopian food

As someone who is very picky about Ethiopian food, this place gets a check from me. Really rich, smokey and cozy flavors in everything I tried.

Fantastic

My friend and I had the feast for two and devoured it! The service was wonderful and it was not busy when we went for lunch on a Thursday, even with precautionary lower occupancy. Super tasty and can’t recommend it enough!

To die for

My god. I was hooked on this place when I wasn’t even vegan yet. Flavorful, cooked with love and always on point. Always lovely and polite service & Never had complaints here about anything. Everything on the menu is great, but definitely suggest the feast so you can try it all! I prefer dinner menu over brunch, but hey - try it all. You won’t be disappointed.

One of our faves

My husband and I love coming here, it's one of our favorite places, especially for brunch! We've brought most of our visiting friends to eat here, too.

Bunna offers a delicious variety of vegan Ethiopian dishes. It is healthy, REAL comfort food, offering a change of pace from the many vegan places that offer less healthy vegan translations of American junk food.

It's busy during brunch hours, but it's worth their tasty brunch menu and $5 drinks.

It's cash only, but there's an ATM available in the back.

Pros: Healthy, filling dishes, Cozy atmosphere , Affordable

Cons: Cash only

Eat the world!

A friend recommended I give this place a try while visiting NYC and I’m so so so glad I did! I’ve never had Ethiopian food before and this was an amazing first experience. We ordered the sampler. It’s a good choice for first-timers. The server was very helpful. We loved most everything we tried. Didn’t especially love eating with our hands. Not authentic, but next time we’d most likely ask for forks. Wish this place was just around the corner so we could try everything on the menu! Highly recommend.

Cons: loud music.

Feast for two 🥰

The feast is the best deal, you get a double portion of everything and they didn’t charge us extra when we asked for more bread. Also the Pushkin cocktail is amazing, I love the texture (that sounds weird, but just trust me).

Awesome Dining Experience

The food is incredibly fresh. The “Vegan Feast”, that includes perfect portions of all of the available entrees, is a wonderful cornucopia of flavors and spices. Worth the 1.5 hour drive for our special Thanksgiving Day experience.

Feast for 2 is what it says

Bunna Cafe is a beautiful restaurant with excellent mood lighting and well-crafted interesting wood work. Me and my partner shared the “Feast for 2” and we left feeling like we’d be satiated, but full of Ethiopian dishes we’d never tried before.

Pros: Filling and hearty, but does not make you explode

Cons: Cash only (plan ahead) or there’s an ATM there

Great vegan spot

Everything I've had here is really good. Sometimes, like on weekend nights, it's way too busy, but I'm really happy it's so popular!!

Excellent Ethiopian restaurant

I came here with three friends and we ordered an item called a "feast" for three people, which included most of the menu items. The portions were huge, and could have fed five people. The food was delicious, and the staff was friendly.

Pros: Excellent food, Generous portions

Cons: Cash only

cash only in 2017

Cash only is obnoxious - no reason for a higher rating.

Cash is legal tender. Not everybody has to accept bank fee scam cards for your convenience. Meatflakes shouldn't even be allowed to write bad reviews on vegan spots. Now they take cards anyway and your winging is the only negative comment on this perfect resto. How do I give *you* two stars? Looooser!

good food but messed up

The first time I went I really enjoyed myself and the food was good and so was the service but each time I called before I went to make sure they're open because I come quite a ways and I take Uber.

As I left Bunna the first time there was a robbery that had just taken place across the street.

I was excited to go back with an Uber so I called in advance again -- just want make sure you're open and she said yes. She did not tell me and Fyi I was hungry when I got there the kitchen was closed and she thought I would want to sit in the restaurant with music blasting and no food -- they would not even let me buy an appetizer so I got back in the Uber and I went to loving hut.

Average

I expected to be blown away after reading the other reviews and seeing everyone's pics. The experience was just okay for me. I ordered a mango/avocado/papaya smoothie that was served at room temperature (which may be the traditional way to serve it but it could have used some ice blended in).

The feast for two was good, but nothing different than anything you'd find in a non-vegan Ethiopian spot and nothing inventive added to it (which is fine). The dessert was okay and a larger portion than what I expected.
I only support vegan restaurants, so, if I ever have a craving for Ethiopian, I would return here, but there was nothing that stood out for me at all. Maybe there are other more interesting items on the menu, but the feast and the dessert are supposedly standard popular items here.

The space is very charming and inviting and a lot more roomy than I thought, but the lighting is a little too low. Also, they only take CASH. To me, for a restaurant of that size, that's kinda suspect, but at least they have an ATM in the back by the bathrooms, which of course charges you $2 for a withdrawal, in addition to the $3 your bank will charge. This is just bad business and unacceptable in NYC in 2003, except it's actually 2017, so that's how behind they are with that.

All in all, average, but decent.

A feast

I adore Bunna Cafe with all my heart. I always get the Feast for Two when I go. It's both delicious, fun to share, and affordable at $28 ($14/person). It's always too much food, so you can even take home some leftovers. Bunna also makes their own drinks from scratch, like a White Russian with homemade nut milk, which is amazing and hard to find.

Pros: Great food, Reasonable prices for lots of food, Lovely atmosphere
