My favorite place for pure vegan Indonesian delights

Pontianak may not be the first place that comes to mind when discussing tourism in Indonesia, but when we talk vegetarian culinary tourism, Pontianak is highlighted on my map. And Bumiku Veggie is where I head to.

I was hooked on the jong tofu (also spelled yong tao foo, yong tau fu, yong tau hu or yong tofu) that offers a selection of noodles, tofu, mushrooms, and vegetables - along with 3 kinds of soup base - that you can choose from to create your own soup (see sumito's photos). There's also a small buffet of precooked dishes - and, best of all, a full menu of Indonesian specialties (like nasi/mee/kwe tiau goreng, gado-gado, satay, rendang, and much more) and other dishes (spaghetti, burgers, teriyaki bento) all freshly prepared to order.

Bumiku's owner (who comfortably speaks and understands English) is an exceptionally gracious host - with an astounding memory. On entering, I was instantly greeted with: "Weren't you here 5 years ago?", which was exactly right! When I inquired about the business name, his eyes lit up with joy as he explained that "Bumiku" is Indonesian, and the name can be translated as "My Veggie Earth": an expression of his hope for worldwide adoption of a vegan diet - and an indication of commitment to healthy vegan food. He also confirmed that they are continually researching to ensure that all ingredients are free from both animal content and harmful substances. So while enjoying the variety, beautiful presentation and delicious tastes of the meals (and the efficient and friendly service of the staff), I was also free from concerns about its contents and preparation. For me, the opportunity to dine at Bumiku Veggie is all I need to justify a trip to Pontianak!
