Nice spot on the highway

Several labelled vegan options, decent coffee. Not bad for a small town, worth a stop if you're passing through.

Cons: Not 100% vegan

Neat place for veg options along SH1

Popular point along SH1 to stop off for a light but satisfying bite to eat - several vegan options in a cute little cafe.

Vegan Options!

Happy to see vegan options - has the vegan (it also gf) lasagna with a side salad and a delicious vanilla bean vegan cupcake. Lovely outdoor seating. A range of non dairy milks. #Veganuary

Pros: Something for everyone , Lovely outdoor seating

Cons: Would love to see even more options available

Try the vegan lasagne!....

There wasn't a lot of vegan options for lunch in the cabinet when we visited but I stopped here to try the lasagne for lunch & it didn't disappoint!

Good portion size with good flavours. I got it with a side salad & it was a tasty lunch.

There were a few vegan sweet treat raw slices & balls on offer for something to go with a coffee too.

Pros: Prompt service. Clean cafe. Good prices.

Great road trip lunch stop

After long hours in the road, it was a delight to stop in and enjoy the very pleasant garden and some good food. The vegan lasagne and samosas (hold the yoghurt) both had good flavor. The raspberry smoothie with almond milk (which also can be made with coconut or soy milk as other vegan options) was excellent. The only thing we didn’t love was the soy cappuccino: we’d recommend getting it with almond or coconut milk, as the soy milk they use doesn’t agree with the coffee.

Great pit stop.

I love this cafe. It’s popular so gets very busy but has some good vegan, dairy & gluten free options. More sweet than savoury for snacks.
A great stop on State Highway 1 when travelling.

Ticks the boxes

Delicious, amazing coffee, as you've probably read and great food. I think probably the second best samosas I've had...

Pros: Tasty, Enough options (a drive through type town), coffee

Cons: a little pricey, though worth it.

Surprising find!

I was playing with my HappyCow app when we stopped here on a recent roadtrip and was surprised to see something come up!

Great service, and not only an awareness of vegan-ness, but also a willingness to oblige. I spotted at least two vegan sweets to go with my coffee (with almond milk). The fruit cake looked amazing, but I went for the choc raspberry tart.

They also had chocolate (pana), chips and other vegan items to take with you. I didn't ask, but there may have been more options.

Nice place to sit, inside or out. The best coffee I had in New Zealand, highly recommend if you are in the area.

Good place to stop on a journey

Brown Sugar Cafe is a surprising find in an area of NZ where there are not many other place offering vegan food.
If you are travelling up or down the North Island it is a good place to stop for lunch or a snack.

They have some vegan options available and are prepared to change items that aren't vegan if it is possible. I had a vegetable samosa with salads (and not just plain lettuce and tomato type salad but a selection of different ones).

They also have vegan cakes and snacks, I had a piece of fruit cake that was very nice and very fruity.

The cafe itself is in what initially looks like a shop and also has a lovely garden out the back to sit in and relax.

Pros: Good food and reasonable vegan choices, Nice relaxing garden to eat in
