A place of immense satisfaction, enlightenment and relaxed excitement. Veganism is fully embraced. Prepare to experience a tapas style journey of culinary delights. I’d recommend 2 or 3 dishes per person. We opted for the tangy buffalo cauliflower wings, a tempeh tandoori, falafel, spelt risotto with kale and beetroot tapenade with home made bread. No pressure, no idiots, open kitchen, chilled vibes, cool staff and a wonderful canal setting. This is not Amsterdam. It’s better.

Had the chef's menu which can be totally vegan. And it was so good. Everthing with veggies as main ingredient. It was elegant and very tasteful. The location is very laidback and down to earth. Will...be...back!!

Excellent food and good beer selection - Edit
A large, open space that has been decorated very cleverly such that despite the openness it feels cosy. A multi-functional space for working, reading, chatting or having a full 3-course meal. Also has a pleasant outdoor area. The food is excellent and the staff are friendly. Try a local beer from the interesting beer selection or the veggie 'bitterballen'!

The concept is shared dining, of which I am a great fan. We ordered the chef’s choice, but with this we did not get our own plate, so I had to share my dishes with my (old) collegues. I love my (old) collegues, but for me it was a little bit too intimate! 😂
Read moreThe chef’s special would consist of 6 dishes per person. I was in shock after the third round when they told us they served us 6 dishes already. It seemed that all the plates consist of two portions. We had to order some bar food, because we were still graving for more food. The cauliflower buffalo wings were absolutely amazing! It really taste like real chicken wings. It was really tasty.

This place is amazing. Outstanding decoration to start with. The chef shows a lot of creativity using seasonal fruits and veggies. Always nice combination of flavors and textures. Never disappointed!

Went here to work with a friend a lot. After 12 oclock you can only work with your laptop on the "working" tables. Although the staff is quite slow and not always nice you get free water and they have nice coffee. Also very good food! The owner is a nice guy! And is also involed how to make the city Utrecht more sustainable.

The service was really good and the place has a nice atmosphere too. Definitely not the last time I have been there.

This was one of the best vegetarian food I ever had, the mixture of different tastes, the exotic and innovative combination, the presentation and finally the lovely service makes me still excited. Thanks to the Chef and the entire staff.

Ik zie wat laptops en hippe mensen en toch niet teveel. De muziek is aanwezig en mag van mij wat zachter maar ach dat is persoonlijk. De sfeer is relaxt. De bediening is hulpvaardig bij het maken van keuzes. Ook voor het bier en weten waar ze het over hebben. Heerlijk geluncht !

We were really surprised by Broei - the pictures on here really don't do it justice ;) The food is creative and flavorful (for example the red beet rendang or the dessert with a cumin cake). A nice go-to if you're visiting Utrecht, together with Oproer!

We made a reservation and were told on the phone, also upon arrival that there'd be limited time for us. Staff was rather socializing with some people at the bar.. ;) so we only had time for one course because of that and it wasnt that special nor enough for going a night out afterwards. It was a nice place though and everyone was friendly.

Had dinner with a good friend at Broei 2wks ago. Pleasantly surprised by the fact good plant-based food can be enjoyed in a place with a good vibe and atmosphere. Main dish with egg-plant and bulgar (if I recall correct), really tasteful. Desert was a choc. mousse with earth pear. I think I never had that before, but what an awesome taste and structure! I always created my own (non-vegan) chocolate mousse and never found any better recipe. Hated to give that dish up with going vegan, though this version lighted up my day, knowing a solid plant based alternative is actually at hand :-)

Food has gotten so good! - Edit
I live close to Broei but somehow I had never been super impressed by them. Sure, they have a lovely and cosy interior and serve vegetarian food, but up until now their vegan selection has been pretty meager, to the point where one waiter even seemed annoyed when I asked if a soup they served that day was vegan.
Read moreThings have changed for the better, however! As one other reviewer mentioned, their kimchi-tempeh sandwich (on the menu in summer 2017) is simply amazing. I've also been there for dinner and was very happy with the spicy cauliflower steak.
In addition, they have a nice selection of sodas (try the cucumber one!) and serve a decent coffee, even with oat milk. (Have to say though that for truly epic coffee you'll have to go across the street to Brauhaus.. you could even pack lunch from Broei to eat at Brauhaus.. just an idea).
Overall, Broei is now a restaurant I happily go to since they have upgraded their vegan options. That kimchi-tempeh sandwich is a dream.
Pros: some great vegan options, nice drinks, good workspace!
Cons: more vegan options would be nice, no vegan cakes?
