Better to arrive early for more food options. Directions: from front entrance of the hospital walk 30m east to the right, and Boonsita is on the left. Look for the large banner with the owner's photo on it along with a number of jay (thai veg) signs. Pleasant, covered outdoor eating area, and there is a lawn right next to it. Reported fully vegan March 2023. Open Mon-Fri 7:30am-3:00pm, Sun 7:30am-3:00pm.

Tasty buffet food

You can get a plate of rice with a chosen number of pre-made dishes for a cheap price. I believe you can also order from a full menu. Food was tasty and staff really friendly! You can also add all sorts of condiments and sauces to your meal.

Buffet selection of dishes

Lovely selection of dishes pre-cooked and stored at room temp. Very cheap! I got 4 options with rice for 55thb which came with a delicious complementary soup. Staff dont understand english, but were very nice. Popular with local nurses. I came around 11am

Fresh and tasty

Great little place to grab some fresh, authentic Thai food. Not pricey, moderate selection, and it even has a coconut milk dessert! Friendly service. Parking is in the back.

FREE on the 15th

Lots of hospital staff eat here, probably not many tourists - they seemed pretty amused by me, in a friendly way!

First time I visited early for lunch, right on midday. I picked 3 dishes with rice from the buffet for 50 baht. My favourite was the tender bamboo shoots. Like most jay places, the food is lightly seasoned but if you need to spice it up, there's a table full of condiments including chili and soy.

I picked up a packet of rice paper rolls to takeaway for later, stuffed with fresh veggies, tofu, mango, and served with a creamy green sauce. I think these were also 50 baht, so pretty good value!

The next day I went back to with my husband a little bit later in the day, around 1pm, and the buffet was empty. The friendly staff let us know they could serve us Khao Soi. Can't go wrong with this curried coconut noodle soup in Northern Thailand so we happily accepted and headed to the condiment table to load up with chilli, lime, and pickled greens. The broth was lovely and light though still creamy and fragrant, perfect for a hot day. When we went to pay, they wouldn't take our money! Every 15th of the month, when Buddhists eat vegetarian, they serve free food! Not sure if they do this on the 1st of the month too.

Boonsita was very close to our hotel but a bit out of town, so not so convenient if you're staying closer to the centre.

Very Good Food, Pleasant Staff

Due to incorrect photos of Boonsita, it took us two attempts to find it. Previous review was spot on...get the Big Set for 80 Baht. It's about five or six different dishes encircling a mound of brown rice--hard to find here in Chiang Rai. I found the seasoning to my liking, my friend found it mostly too spicy. Many of the customers were from the hospital across and down/up the street. One dish had large pieces of bamboo shoots that was tasty. I mostly think of bamboo shoots in small pieces in Chinese food. Like most places serving V or Vg food, they close for the day mid afternoon.

I think some of those old photos (from 2014) might be of a previous location.

Must try budget food in Chiang Rai

Great buffet! I recommend you take the big set for 80. We went 2 days in a row and the food wasn't too similar. You can also order a la carte. You have a variety of sauces to add and a small soup is included. Today they also gave us some peas and cucumbers on the side.

Good vegan options

We headed here for an early breakfast. It's buffet style where you ask for rice/noodles and toppings of choice. We had the salad plus the brown rice with Thai green vegetable curry. Good taste but needed some spicing to add flavour. They don't understand English so use a translator app to ask for what you need.

Pros: Vegan and vegetarian options a plenty, Reasonable price

Friendly, but such small servings

I keep scouring Chiang Rai for budget vegan restaurants, so I went to this one today for lunch. Delicious steamed brown rice measured with a tiny cup, and cold veg dishes, which by now I got used to.. Lol. I picked a fake meat dish with shitaake mushroom and broccoli with tofu over my tiny rice, all for 35 baht. Tasty hot soup came with it. The dishes were kinda dissapointing, rather bland, I must say. I really don't get why the servings are so small. Ok it's cheap, but where is the true vegan spirit?

Pros: Central location in Jetyod street, Clean, Friendly service

Cons: Cold dishes, Tiny servings

So-so

It was nice to find a vegetarian/vegan restaurant but the food wasn’t anything to shout about, and I’m usually easily pleased! Oh well, maybe I went on a bad day.

Cheap and cheerful

The owner here accommodated us with food though the buffet had closed by the time we arrived. The curry and soup were very good though I could have done without the fake meats.

Pros: Friendly owners, Very cheap

Quick, cheap, tasty, all veg (safe to point at your choices)

Nice place, super cheap buffet (65 Baht for my plate with many options), easy to find, quite tasty.

No English spoken. Point at the food you want (all veg, so it's safe). The lady showed me the price on a calculator! Also the food was only luke warm (11:15am).

Anyway, try it. You'll like it. Charming authentic veg place.

Pros: Veg. Many options. , Tasty , Cheap

Cons: Food not hot (temp) , No English (point at what you what)

Deeeeeelicious!

Really pretty place that is popular with locals and you can totally see why: the food is YUMMY! Lovely range of dishes, great brown rice, nothing too greasy, super fresh ingredients, and very reasonably priced, too. Also includes free soup and water. A great find. God, I LOVE Happy Cow!

Pros: Nice setting, Great food, cheap

Cons: none

The one and only Boonsita Restaurant

This is the one and only Boonsita Restaurant, in august 2012 it moved from the old busstation towards the Prachanukroh Hospital at corner Satharn Payabarn road and Jed Yod soi 3.

Prices are a few bahts higher, this is compensated by the far better quality of the food.

Closed on saturday.

On the old location near the old busstation is an other veg. rest. now. That one used to be Boonsita, it is no more!

Pros: very good

Cons: hot thin roof

Delicious

The food here is really tasty and inexpensive. It's located a minute from the bus station, to the right of the 7 eleven. It's buffet style, nothing fancy, and the food isn't always hot. They have different dishes on different days.

Pros: Good food, inexpensive, location
