Great place to chill - Edit
This place has wonderful hours. And they're open earlier than most coffee shops on Sundays! There are plenty of places to sit, have something to drink and eat, and read a good used book! They have a dedicated vegan chai for those who don't drink coffee. I asked the guy at the counter if they had any vegan baked goods and he gave me muffins straight from the oven. So good.

More Vegan than meets the eye. Just ask! - Edit
I stopped here for lunch recently even though other reviews, and indeed the shop’s own information, indicated limited vegan options. The good new is that, while there may be only 1 vegan dessert option (and a very good one) there are many more for food. The key is JUST ASK. I was able to customize a sandwich to be vegan AND on gluten-free vegan bread. There is a nice grab-and-go case in the front that has vegan items (grain based and other salads). The staff were friendly and helpful with my requests.

a few vegan options - Edit
They’ve got only one vegan option which is pretty good but I’ve had better burgers. There’s also a few vegetarian sandwiches you can veganise by getting them without cheese. The vegan chocolate cake however was amazing. Super creamy and rich. Even the non-vegans enjoyed it.

Cozy bookstore cafe w/ 3 solid veggie sandwiches - Edit
I have loved Book Trader for years! They are a wonderful New Haven fixture - a great independent bookstore with a veg-friendly cafe. The big cafe room is made of windows, like eating in a greenhouse, and you're surrounded by books! On nice weather days, take advantage of one of New Haven's rare outdoor patios and people-watch on Chapel Street.
Read moreThe menu has had 2 vegetarian sandwiches forever: Vonnegut's (roasted) Veggies, which could be vegan if you hold the brie; and the Tempesto, a quite nice tomato & mozz sandwich. They've recently added a vegan option, the Feast of Eden lentil-quinoa veggie burger, which I have not gotten to try but have high hopes for. The (non-vegan) brownies are also Amazingly good and as big as your palm. Homemade iced tea and OJ are good drink options.
Super cute cozy bookstore cafe, surrounded by books on a charming part of Chapel Street. A winner!
Pros: affordable, charming location, books!
Cons: only a couple choices
