A destination

Living on MDI, driving an hour to the Blue Hill Co-op is a regular destination as they carry so much more than I can find on island or in Ellsworth. Amazing selection of local produce and vegan goods (dairy, “meats” and tofu products, fermented foods, etc.) Huge bulk section which is the area I find most useful, carrying hard to find items like organic oat groats.

The cafe has improved with regular V items and always a rotation of baked goods and grab and go.
I got the falafel burger on a GF bun (really good bun - I did not specifically ask if it was vegan, though mentioned I was vegan.) Delicious and hefty side of fries.
Lovely outside seating area with umbrellas for shade or rain.

This is a vibrant community spot, and a fun place to run into or meet kind people.

Pros: Large well stocked store, Many prepared vegan items , Kind people

Blue Hill Co-op

I found plenty of good vegan options, including seitan tacos at the cafe. I had a vegan and GF peach ginger muffin that was delightful!

Nice building, but expensive, and poor cafe

In a new, larger building. Usual vegan options for a co-op, but prices are high. For example, Little Lad's fruit tarts are $3.50 here, but I get them for $2.50-3.00 elsewhere. They have Treeline cashew cheeses for $8.99, but I paid $6.99 at a different co-op. At the cafe, we tried to order a breakfast sandwich with tofu (as listed on the menu sign) and they weren't sure if they could make it. They called the chef out, who said no, they don't have tofu for breakfast sandwiches. While standing right under the sign listing "tofu patty" as an option. Overall, not impressed. You'll find something to eat here, but prepare to pay a lot.

Lots of vegan items

Stopped by on vacation looking for avocados and nutritional yeast. It’s a small grocery but big for a Maine Island. Lots of vegan options in a new spacious store. Looks like it’s only around a year old.

Pros: Lots of vegan products , Good selection for an Island grocery , Vegan option at sandwich and juice bar

Cons: Expensive

limited "co-op"

This little co-op had many vegan necessities, including deli salads and sandwiches, as well as bulk nuts and produce. Many usual vegan items are not available, cannot be easily ordered, and cannot be set aside upon request after shipment arrival. Many local products can be found at this co-op, and a new location with more parking is in the works. We became co-op members when we moved to Blue Hill, expecting the usual cooperative methods of decision-making and accounting for members' grocery needs. I have found out that the board makes decisions without querying members, and there is little opportunity for members to voice requests or concerns, save for attending the seemingly non-published board meetings, and waiting until the end of the meeting to find out if there is time for member comments. Strange. We mostly shop elsewhere, but we like some of the deli items and the occasional special vegan shelf item if we can buy it before it sells out and is not reordered.

Pros: Cute atmosphere for a quick stop, Stocks some vegan staples, Some vegan deli and bakery options daily

Cons: not all vegan needs can be met at this co-op , strange interpretation of cooperative membership, very expensive

Nice co-op; difficult parking

It was such a pleasant surprise to find such a well-stocked co-op in the little town of Blue Hill. They have a small selection of vegan 'meat' and 'cheese' products, sorbet in the freezer, and some lovely fresh baked bread. The cafe in the back offered a couple of vegan baked goods. This place is not huge, but they have a nice selection for the size of the co-op.

The only downside is that it is very difficult to park at the co-op (at least during the busy summer time when we visited). There were not enough spots for folks to park, so we had to circle around and go back. I noticed that we weren't the only folks driving around Blue Hill trying to find a spot or dropping someone off to shop while another person drives around waiting to pick them up. If it weren't for the parking, I would give Blue Hill Co-op four stars, but it was so annoying that it made it difficult to enjoy their otherwise lovely store. I did notice that they are planning to expand the store, so hopefully in the future, they will have more space and better parking.

Pros: Nice selection, Vegan baked goods in cafe

Cons: Need more parking spots

Great Co-op!

Their bakery and deli is really nice considering the small size, and they are offering more and more vegan baked goods! Sandwiches and salads are always good. Shop is small, but has a great produce and bulk section, as well as decently stocked aisles.
