Can’t Be Perfect All the Time - Edit
I have been here a handful of times now, and each time before today the staff was great, the food was wonderful, and the coffee was awesome, even when we got there late one day and had limited options. The breakfast sandwich was worth the trip from Chicago that time. Well, today was different. One of the girls working the counter could not have been more annoyed that she had to serve us. She was so incredibly rude that I almost asked for a different person to help us. It took my parents a minute to order because there was a line, and like four people can fit in the door so you can only see the options once you’re at the front. My parents are also older, so they take a minute to decide. My mom felt so rushed that she didn’t even order coffee so as not to be an inconvenience. The one girl in the Minnesota shirt was helpful and super nice when I got snacks for the road, but it didn’t make up for the other girl’s bad attitude. My parents said the apple fritters were amazing, and the black currant donut I got this time with the lucky latte was great, but I am not as excited to go back as I used to be. If the same girl is working next time, I will definitely wait for someone else to help us. Some customer service training should be in her future or she should just get a job where she doesn’t have to serve others.

Great Unexpected Find - Edit
I bought the sugar cookie, berry crumble, black currant donut, and chocolate croissant, as well as the Kona latte. Everything was great! I asked one of the employees for a suggestion since I am from out of town, and he recommended the croissant. Unlike other places I’ve eaten at, the croissant was light and moist at the same time with just enough chocolate. Great treats for a fall morning. I’ve never been to New Buffalo, but I’m already making plans to return this summer with my sisters and we’ll definitely stop at Black Currant.

Great spot in super cute area - Edit
I really enjoyed my bagel with hummus, avocado, tomatoes and tempeh bac'un. I also tried the vegan coffee cake, which was delicious. My iced latte with oat milk was very decadent.

The stars did not align 🙁 - Edit
I was so excited to try this place, having read all the rave reviews on Happy Cow. Unfortunately, we could make it there only 20 minutes before closing (I got there at 2:40pm, they close at 3). The lady at the counter acted irritated to see me there, and rolled her eyes when I asked if I could get a sandwich to go. She pointed to a sign on the counter that says last sandwich order is at 2:45pm. (It was 2:41pm at that moment, but ok I get it 🤷🏻♀️) About two minutes later, a second employee looked me over (she looked annoyed that I was there) and asked if I was waiting on anything. The first girl then told her that I was waiting on a to-go order to be warmed up.
Read moreI totally get that we were late (and that’s fine) but some courtesy/ kindness would have been appreciated.
I ended up picking up the savory lentil hand pie (pretty good) and the berry crumble bar (excellent). I’m sure the food at this place is great, but I was so upset by the way I was treated here.
Cons: Rude and discourteous staff, I won’t return here.

GREAT! - Edit
This place was awesome, I will be back for sure. The baked goods were excellent as were the sandwiches. I would go so far as to say the East West Reuben was the best sandwich I ever had. This little place is a gem, and it's not just impressive for its location either, I could totally see this place doing well in Ann Arbor or Detroit.

So many options and really kind staff - Edit
We got a berry crumble bar, a snickerdoodle cookie and cinnamon swirl coffee cake - plus two iced coffees with (organic!) syrups. My partners fav was the crumble bar and mine was the coffee cake but the snickerdoodle was also sooo amazing. They also had a chocolate cookie and some banana bread, everything was super easily labelled. Theyre vegetarian and so all of their sandwiches could be made vegan and had things like seitan and tempeh and a cheese alternative. The staff were really kind (even though we got there less than 10mins before closing im so sorry!), and we sat outside in this super cute bench area with flowers. Such a lovely place!!

Amazing! So many options and all delicious! - Edit
It is tough to find a place with options for vegan pastries but they have about 7-10 options. They are all good! All their latte syrups are vegan. All their lunches are vegetarian (and delicious! Many seitan and tempeh options). My wife and I make the 45 minute drive to come here maybe once a month because we enjoy it so much!

Excellent food and coffee/tea! We visited two days in a row, and loved all the sandwiches we tried, but be sure to try the Tempeh-Lettuce-Tomato! Daily rotating vegan pastries among an all-vegetarian display. Their cold brew coffee and ice tea are amazing too!

I went to blackcurrant today and not only were there tons of vegan options, but the staff were incredibly friendly and the atmosphere was so cute and positive! I bought the vegan brownie, vegan banana chocolate muffin, and two vegan cookies which i believe were also gluten free. While the cookies were too hard for my liking, the brownie was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and the banana muffin was pretty good too!! my non-vegan family enjoyed their other pastries and I plan to go back tomorrow to try their sandwiches!

Amazing to find a bakery/breakfast spot in a small town like this that has so many thoughtful vegan and gluten free options. Their entire menu is vegetarian which is refreshing for those of us who dislike the smell of meat. Friendly staff, great coffee, roomy sitting area, what more could you want!

Great bakery - Edit
Great, quick service. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable about vegan items. Vegan goodies were clearly labeled. Items change daily. We had double chocolate cupcakes and strawberry scones. Both were delicious. They offered soy, almond, and coconut milk for coffees.

Excellent Local Bakery - Edit
The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. There are plenty of vegan options that are marked and they staff knows all of the options off hand as well. The prices are very reasonable and the taste is outstanding! My boyfriend and I enjoyed their Vegan Banana Chocolate Chip Muffin, Vegan oatmeal cookie, Vegan Death By Chocolate cookie, and two DELICIOUS coffees! I was very pleased the coffee is served at a comfortable drinking temperature so I didn’t have to wait to enjoy my drink with my sweets. I will definitely be back for all the deliciousness they have in store. I can’t wait to try their sandwiches and other breakfast items. I love having a local place to enjoy vegan foods.
