Some Vegan Options Too

The soup of the day, when we were there, was Barley Soup. It was 100% vegan and it tasted very nice. The rest of the menu was essentially vegetarian. The soup cost €3.25, so good enough value. The restaurant is in the basement by the way. The staff don’t speak English also.

Upstairs window seating was available as well as plenty of open tables. Monday through Friday has lunch special of soup, healthy drink and main course for $8 per person. We had all vegan. A bargain for excellent quality. Looking to a repeat visit. Nice shops in the area near old-town.

Light meals only and very limited choice

A bit disappointed with this basic cafeteria setup in a basement room. You choose at the counter and when we arrived at 12.00 there was just a hot vegetable lasagne and a cold vegetable and pineapple(!) quiche available. Nothing is labelled. We were asked if we wanted salad though I think the price was the same with or without. It was mainly lettuce and grated carrot and very plain. We were only offered fruit juice or water to drink. We were half way through the meal when we realised there was a bowl of dressing available by the till and that helped liven up the salad. The lasagne and quiche were pleasant but not large portions and overall it was just a light meal. A second unlabelled hot savoury dish was brought out while we were eating which looked okay. There were a few small cakes available but we weren't tempted to linger.

Good healthy food

This place is located in the old town, it's a health food shop and then you go downstairs for the cafe. They do full plates and half plates with lots of choice for vegetarians, we only had one choice as vegans but it was very nice. I think the menu changes daily, it is sort of buffet style but they serve you. Today was tofu and seitan with roasted veg and a cous cous with nuts and a salad.

Pros: Lots of vegetarian options, Healthy food, no junk, Good price

Cons: Only one vegan main

Healthy & tasty plant-based food!

Bioforma is a health store (upstairs) and a "buffet" style restaurant (downstairs) all-in-one.
They serve vegetarian food but they always have vegan options as well, however they make a limited amount of food for the day and sometimes it runs out too quickly (it's buffet style, they serve the portions for you though).
Every time I've eaten here, the vegan food is always healthy & pretty tasty. The desserts are limited as they tend to be vegetarian. Sometimes, they have vegan desserts though.
As a health store, the selection of vegan products is just okay.

Pros: Food is healthy & tasty., Reasonable prices & portions.

Warmes Essen von 12 - 14 Uhr.

Auch ohne Deutsch und wenig Englisch wurde ich sehr gut beraten. Auf Nachfrage nach Allergenen wurde immer geantwortet.

Kind of a buffet with vegan options

It’s nice veg based food. There were two meals which one of them was vegan - ratatouille and a vegan soup of the day. I opt for half portion of the soup and the main, still got pretty a lot of food for €8.80.
It was sort of plain on flavour but you can grab condiments tray by the counter and help yourself.

You grab the food downstairs and pay upstairs and can bring your meal to sit outside.

Little restaurant inside a supermarket

This is a little restaurant inside a bio supermarket. I believe that they have a vegan dish every day. If you don't like the vegan dish of the day you can ask for a dish with tofu or seitan with rice, nuts and salad. They have some vegan desserts too. You can eat outside the restaurant on a nice street.

Plain but tasty

Only one vegan option in the restaurant which was a plain bulgur and vegetable mix, came with a bit side salad though. The shop and everything from vegan cheese to biscuits and plant milks, so worth the visit.

Great midday meal

We were famished and loved it here, we had aubergine bake of the day and the staff knew which items were vegan or not. We also shared a tofu sandwich. The orange juice is brilliant. A great find! Nice to be out of the sun downstairs. You pay once you get back upstairs so it enabled us to buy some cheese and bars as well, :)

Pros: Helpful staff who know ingredients , Shop upstairs , Cool atmosphere

Cons: Initially confusing when to pay!

A real find.

This establishment is a real find. Not only did we have a very tasty, if simple lunch but the store also had other items for us to help us during our stay in a location where being fully vegetarian is a little challenging.

The selection is a little limited but it would be churlish to rate this as a negative as there is a selection. In addition, we had freshly squeezed orange juice and felt well satisfied at a fair price after our meal.

Staff were friendly and it is clear that many locals eat here - always a good sign.

Lifesaver

Had a really good meal at this little basement buffet cafe as I was quite protein deficient at this point after a few days in Madera this was really welcome ! They let me break the portion system and have a bit of everything (I needed 2 plates) I left feeling full but not unpleasantly stuffed and much better for it ! I had Vegan lasagna, beans, a burger (without bun) a fresh salad with sprouts. The staff were pleasant friendly and welcoming. Not everyone there spoke good English as mentioned in a previous review but why should they it's not England ! We all got along fine :-) I enjoyed my food immensely X

Nothing vegan there

My partner and I arrived here at 5 o'clock to find that it looked closed up. There was no one there and it was all covered over. My partner asked if they were open and the assistant said they were, but the only thing they had to offer was a cream cheese sandwich- little use to myself as an ovo vegetarian and my partner who is a vegan. Over all it was a really poor experience

Not so tasty and poor eating area

Just like almost everywhere else in Funchal, lunch time starts at noon time.

Food was not so tasty but it was vegan and included a little bit of protein as well and for this reason I was happy to eat here once during the week we stayed in Funchal.

Unpleasant eating area.

Pros: Vegan food

Cons: Everything else

Nice food, small place

Upstairs is a shop and the restaurant is downstairs.
They offer 3 dishes of the day to choose for 6,80€
I had a veggie lasagna which was good. Not a big portion but you can also get a dessert.
The place is small and it was quite warm inside but they serve fast so I did not spend a lot of time there.
There are also veggie sandwiches to take away for 2-3€ each.

Pros: 3 different options to choose, Vegetarian and vegan, no meat or fish offered

Cons: A bit small which is ok, but too hot inside

The best option to eat vegetarian/vegan in Madeira Island

This is the second completely vegetarian restaurant that you'll find in Madeira Island. Serves in a buffet method vegetarian dishes with vegan options.
The menu is elaborated according to each day of the week - usually it has veggie lasagne, bean/quinoa burgers, tempeh and fresh apple juice with spiruline. Sometimes, it has vegan desserts like apple pie but you'll have to ask if it contains eggs and dairy.
The price is fair (Main dish + Juice + Dessert = about 10€) for the amount/quality of food, specially knowing that is the only restaurant in the island with a certain variety of vegetarian options, excluding soups and simple salads...

Pros: Completely vegetarian restaurant, Good price, Nice diversity/quality of food

Cons: Place too small

Food ok but a bit depressing

Simple but tasty food. Three vegetarian main dishes (2 are vegan) with raw vegetables for 5,50 euros, 6,50 with a drink. Offers also sandwiches and cakes. It's a quite cheap and nice option in Funchal. But it's a bit depressing downstairs, with no windows, almost no decoration and white blinding lights.

Pros: good portions, price, healthy

Cons: not a warm place

At last a real vegan lunch on Madeira!

For a vegan Madeira is quite though to eat out, especially when you are not located in Funchal, but on our visit to Funchal we visited this restaurant in the cellar of the Bioforma shop. There was not much to choose from and they barely spoke English but they had one hot meal with rice or bulgur with salad for us. My children had some vegetarian options because they are not vegan. I loved my vegan meal, I have made a picture of it in the display and on my plate so people who speak Portuguese can read what it was  The people where very friendly and helpful, I was glad one of them understood no egg and no milk/cheese.

Vegetarian - yes... But not too vegan :(

I was in Madeira for my honeymoon and I had just decided to eat vegan. So I was very pleased to find out there was actually ONE vegetarian restaurant (in all of Madeira...). Unfortunately, I don't think the personnel was very kind or helpful, and they didn't speak much English. I had to explain that I only wanted to eat vegan food, which they seemed to find odd.

For the main course, I could have couscous with grilled vegetables. They also put some salad on the plate, which turned out to be a bad choice because it was very boring and without any sauce/dressing. However, the vegetables were very nice.
Then as desert I had tofu cream pie, which was amazing - the tofu was so soft and creamy, you could have fooled anyone to believe it wasn't vegan at all. But it definitely was!

We went here around lunchtime, and you won't believe how many people there were. There weren't many tables, most people had to sit on bar-chairs to eat.

So the restaurant could definitely use some improvement, but I would definitely recommend it for the food, because it's a relief to eat there after visiting all those restaurants that only sell meat or fish...

Pros: Great pastry, Vegan choices available, Affordable

Cons: Unfriendly personnel, Very busy around lunchtime, Few vegan choices

Shut on Saturday!

Shut on Saturday 14th December. Gutted! We had walked around ages to find it too. :-(. Ended up going back to our cruise ship to eat.
Another time maybe as Madeira was a beautiful island.

good small vegetarian lunch restaurant

While vegetarians can always find a place, Madeira is not easy for vegans. This small restaurant saved us at lunch time. It has always a vegan otion (and dessert)and the staff was very friendly and flexible. Caterina ("Kathy") the manager will help you and support if you need anything. Happy to have found it ...

Pros: vegan option, good value, friendly staff
