only for students though…

The food is amazing! They only serve students and staff but somehow I managed to sneak into that place and had the exact amount of money in cash to pay for my food (not too cheap but tbh I overloaded my plate as usual).
It’s a buffet with many vegetables and fried and deep fried food options.
they have a really nice choice of tea and coffee too!
bring a lot of cash and if needed ask a student to pay for you with his/her member card.

Pros: choice of food , teas , all the deep fried stuff

Cons: only for students / staff (usually)

Hi 12munchies. This policy is set up because recently there is an influx of visitors from the mainland to the university causing stress on students...

Great Option At The University, Basic But Exceeeds Expectations

Based in the centre of HKU, Bijas is a Chinese vegetarian, pay-by-weight eatery aimed at students and faculty members. As a result, the pricing is incredibly low and great value, if you're willing to forego some frills.

When here, we had some of the set menu choices, as well as experiencing the buffet counter.

The DIY veggie combo from the set menu is an incredibly good value feed (at 36HKD) where you receive a bowl of noodles, with three different vegetables, with a sauce. You also receive a side of seaweed soup. Although, it's a basic meal, the sauce itself is really flavourful and makes it much better than expected.

The buffet had a lot of options. It comes with unlimited rice, soup and tea/water. It's almost entirely traditional Chinese vegetarian, so you can definitely come up with a hearty, filling meal. When we filled our plate, it came to under 50HKD, and with the unlimited sides, was more than enough.

Seemingly all of the options currently offered up were Vegan, so that was a positive, and the restaurant has an inclusive hiring policy, which is always welcome! The staff were very pleasant and friendly.

It's still a university cafeteria-style venue so there's harsh lighting and basic furnishings. The bathrooms are outside the restaurant and require a bit of a trek. Overall though, if you're in the university for whatever reason, this is probably the place to eat. No complaints!

Pros: Really Affordable And Filling Food Options, Friendly Staff And Inclusive Hiring

Cons: Harsh Lighting And Cafeteria-Esque Interior, Bathrooms Some Distance Away

Chinese vegetarian cafe

Was attending a lecture at HKU with work colleagues and we ate here for lunch afterwards. It was pay by weight and came out quite reasonable. Quite a lot of variety. If I was a student, can imagine I would eat here a lot!

Pros: Reasonable price, Chinese vegetarian range

My most favourite place in Hong Kong

All Chinese vegetarian. Amazingly good atmosphere. You can feel the peace in the air. Food is really good. You pay by weight of the plate.

Best restaurant/canteen in HKU

Lunch and dinner is pay by weight style buffet with large variety of dishes including Chinese vegetable dishes, stews/curry, dim sum, mock meats and Chinese desserts. Unlimited refills for rice and soup.
Most dishes are vegan. Staff are friendly and always offering to help. Inexpensive compared to other vegetarian eateries in HK.

Pros: Variety of good quality dishes , Unlimited refill on soup and rice , Employs people with disabilities

Cons: Busy during lunch hour, Hard to estimate cost of meal (by weight)

A lifesaver for HKU students

I ate at this restaurant so many times during my exchange studies at The University of Hong Kong. There are many kinds of tasty foods available at the buffet during lunchtime and dinner. Breakfast and afternoon tea aren't bad either!

There was one time where one of the foods at the buffet had honey in it but the manager let me know when I was about to take that food. He said it's the only food that has honey. In addition, some of the beverages use honey, which is clearly stated (e.g. lemon drink honey). I am not sure whether the milk served with coffee is cow's milk or not but I always drunk my coffee black. Other than these three non-vegan cases, all the other food served is vegan.

The staff is extremely friendly and they always made my day! If you are an HKUer and eat at this restaurant frequently, the staff will start to recognize you and they will start talking to you more and more. Sometimes they gave free food like some berries or a couple of buns. All of this gave me even more reasons to come back to this restaurant.

Pros: Many options at the buffet, Friendly staff

Cons: Crowded during lunchtime

Bijas Vegetarian, Hong Kong

To update this in light of other reviews suggesting this place is expensive. If you're watching your budget there's 2 options for this place:-

a) go in the mid afternoon when they are offering the mid afternoon menu. Its a small and simple menu (e.g. noodle soup) but at 20+ hkd per dish is inexpensive

b) The pay by weight buffet is accompanied by unlimited soup of the day and rice. Thus when at the buffet, go easy on what you stack on your plate. Also avoid adding sauce to your plate, just go for solid food.

The Manager told me a few weeks that the current chef only cooks vegan food. Who knows if that will change. Note though that the counter staff use non-vegan ingredients such as honey in some beverages.

Good Food Bad Value

Im a guy on a tight budget and I had good things about biljas...good food and inexpensive...the choices are great, the food good with great flavour and unlimited rice and soup but for the small plate of food I got at 83 bucks, not the best value...also not the easiest to find...

Pros: Good Food, Great Flavour, Good Choice

Cons: Bad Value, Miserly Portions

good quality & selection, crowded, pay by weight

This is an offshoot of Harvester in Sheung Wan district and has the same format: dish as much as you want from the food selection (20+ dishes) and pay by weight. Free unlimited rice and soup.

This is on the campus of Hong Kong University and gets very crowded during lunch hour (12-2pm), popular with students and staff. (My HKU professor friend told me that this is the only place with decent food on campus ever, and he's been teaching at HKU for over 30 years!)

Good selection of Cantonese style vegetarian food. (Not sure if everything is vegan.) Good variety and quality.

As with Harvester, be careful with how much food you put on your plate. It's easy to overspend here - our plates were HKD78 and HKD58. I saw a few female students who put a tiny portion of a few items on their plate, mainly to get up to the minimum spend requirement, I guess. I can't see how they will be satisfied with that little amount of food, unless they plan on feasting on the free soup and rice...
