So good I did a happy dance! - Edit
Best bacon egg and cheese bagel I’ve had in years! The bacon was crispy and I added corned beef. I can’t wait to try more. My daughter really enjoyed the egg salad and latke and the Ruben gets 2 thumbs up too!

Vegan Jewish deli - Edit
Very good deli menu, and it’s all vegan! Came by with a mixed group of vegans and omnis and everyone loved their meal. Very casual, a few tables outside, friendly service. The Ruben was my highlight, and the bagels were great too. Highly recommended.

Tastes like the real thing! - Edit
What else can be said? My sandwich and my soup tasted just like the non vegan versions I grew up eating before going vegan. It’s great I love it and I come here often now!

I had an egg and cheese sandwich on a gluten free everything bagel.
Read moreIt was really good. The eggs were particularly good . The bagel wasn't as well seasoned as I would have liked.

Yum! - Edit
My family and I decided to drive out to Ben & Esther’s today, and we were not disappointed. We each got four different sandwiches/bagels, a sour pickle, a dill pickle, matzo ball soup, and a b&w cookie. Our sandwiches were delicious, especially my “lox” bagel and the BLT. I have never had matzo ball soup before, but without anything to compare to, it was tasty. Excellent pickles and cookies as well. I love the location near state and ample parking. Definitely looking forward to trying other options.

Brings me memories of Jewish delis on the east coast. - Edit
I was so excited to hear about a vegan Jewish deli and they did not disappoint. I went 3 days in a row. The half sours pickles are delicious. The steak and egg sandwich and brisket sandwich was amazing. I love the black and white cookies and the matzo ball soup gives me nostalgia. I found my new favorite place 💜💜💜

Quite a Pickle - Edit
We were so excited to try Ben & Esther’s especially since the closure of two of favorite vegan breakfast sandwich spots in SD, but it was a somewhat sour experience. Their delicious deli pickles aside, the bagels seemed bready and dry and the carrot lox was a bit heavy on the liquid smoke. Although our bagel experience wasn’t the best—we will come back for sandwiches and soup and hope for a different experience. Overall, happy to have one more vegan establishment in SD.

good but maybe not quite good enough to justify the wait - Edit
The wait was long (like at least 45 minutes between the line to order and the wait for the food to be prepared), but the food was yummy (although the babka was dry).

Underwhelming - Edit
First the good: the matzo ball soup is a great portion for the price, and quite yummy. The rugelach, hamantaschen, and Cookie jammers were all delicious, and melted in my mouth.
Read moreThen the meh: the apricot babka just tastes like sweet bread. The apricot itself is undetectable. The knish is fine. It needed seasoning.
And the bad: The Kugel was extremely sweet and covered in pepper. It was a strange, gelatinous mess that neither my sister nor I could finish. The latkes had some type of sweet, weird after taste. Maybe they put apple in their latkes. I’m not sure. I was so hoping for traditional tasting latkes, as I can’t find them vegan anywhere. The pecan pie was a gross, overly sweet, wet, mess of an apple pie with pecans thrown on top.
If I ever go back here, it will be for the matzo ball soup and cookies. I still want to try the sandwiches. I just wish they would give us the traditional Jewish deli foods we’ve been missing. They don’t need to have a weird, sweet twist. Give me plain, potato latkes. Give me a vegan, eggy kugel that tastes like my childhood.
Pros: Yummy matzo ball soup, Good cookies, Fair prices
Cons: Strange textures, Too much random sweetener , Less traditional tasting

Bomb - Edit
Came through at 8am day after opening. Ordered a steak and egg and whitefish sandwiches. Steak & Egg was convincing, if you're into mock meat breakfast it was well worth it.
Read moreThe whitefish sandwich was smoky and flavorful. Definitely the highlight of my morning. Will be back to try more (eyeing that Reuben), this spot won't disappoint.
