Had an overall good experience yesterday. The staff who may have possibly been the owners were friendly and welcoming at least to us. Food was good, as with most places that aren't specifically offering vegan items you really have to be smart about what you are ordering. The vegetarian menu was pretty large, I was able to only clearly identify (based on past reviews) one dish I could safely make vegan for myself which was an eggplant/tofu dish. Kids enjoyed their meals. I felt the price was pretty excessive though above $12-16 per dish.
I was a first-time visitor to Basil Leaf and alerted my server immediately I am vegan. She said anything on the lunch menu (I was there at 2:45 p.m.) could be made "vegan." I ordered the "Swimming Rama" with tofu -- it comes with "house peanut sauce." As I started to eat -- after taking few bites -- I decided to read Basil Leaf reviews on the Happy Cow website. One fantastic review warned of dairy in some of the Basil Leaf dishes. What do you know?! The "house peanut sauce" is made with cow's milk! I spoke to the manager, who had no idea that vegan meant "no animal products"; in fact, he tried to convince me that "vegan" means "no meat." Ugh. Try as I might, I could not convince him (or my server) that vegans do not consume dairy, eggs, flesh, etc. After considerable back-and-forth, he removed it from the bill. Lesson learned: Read Happy Cow reviews if going to a place you have never been before! Be very careful, if you are a vegan, if ordering at Basil Leaf.
Although its relatively easy to make any dish vegan (the restaurant owner says they don't use fish sauce at all), the peanut sauce has cow's milk in it, but not all the staff know that. Red and green curry are vegan, but they sneak cow's milk into other curries.
If you are on the West side without transportation and craving Asian food, it's worth it. There are a few vegan options to choose from, and the wait staff knows what they are. I ate there at lunch, and the portions were medium sized, but the prices were high (around $9 a plate, which I consider high for lunch). The food was fine, but a bit bland. I will not visit this restaurant again, since Olympia has so many other options for vegan Asian food.

OK - Edit
The food tasted pretty good, and was a good price. My mother and my stomach hurt for the next 15 hours though!

good food - Edit
We visit frequently because it's close but also because the flavor is good, too! Very friendly service, but can be a bit slow sometimes. I recommend!
