We LOVE The Basil Cafe!

The Basil Cafe is about an hour from where we live, so we only get there about once a month. But it is always well worth it. You can order pretty much anything on the menu as a vegan dish, but I've found that the most flavorful dishes are the ones that don't have to be adapted. Things like their homemade wide rice noodles are delish, as are their curries. We also love a number of the appetizers, especially the Bang Bang Broccoli.

I should also let you know that the staff here is terrific. They are always attentive and with smiles on their faces. We miss the restaurant when they close for a long stretch during the summer, but it is always a joy to go back when they are open again!

Pros: Excellent Food, Terrific Staff, The appetizers are terrific.

Cons: None

Not bad- a little pricey

All the main dishes are around $20. I got the spicy basil house special- wasn’t really that spicy, but it was flavorful. I probably wouldn’t get it again though. I also got to try durian!! The durian rice dessert was very interesting haha. So I’m glad for this restaurant! Will be back to try other things.
Also, extremely friendly staff.

Great Vegan Options!

My partner (also vegan) has always had nothing but good things to say every time she's gone, so my expectations were already high. I had to call in our order for pickup due to there being no way to place an order online. The person taking our order did a great job of verifying the items and respective modifications to veganize some of the dishes. The food was ready for pickup at the communicated time. The person at the front of house handling the takeout orders was very nice, and even went to the back to grab a box to carry everything due to the size of our order. I had a few bites of my partner's go-to, the Basil Fried Rice w/ Tofu (modifications needed to be vegan), and it was incredible! We also loved the Pad Thai-Rito (modifications needed to be vegan), which consisted of two GIGANTIC spring rolls stuffed with Pad Thai. I ordered the Nam Khao (modifications needed to be vegan), which was tasty but quite dry. It is served with lots of fresh lettuce, mint, and cilantro, so with a vinaigrette of some sort, it could make an excellent lunch option. To drink, I got the Purple Rain, which was delicious, but for $6, I wish the to-go size was a little bigger. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my experience and look forward to going back soon for a sit-down meal!

Pros: Clear vegan labeling, Unique offerings, Easy customizations

Cons: Slightly pricey, No online ordering

Good Food, Bad Experience

If you plan to eat here, consider making a reservation. I had to wait for a table when it was only half capacity.

I'm not sure why my experience was so counter to the other reviews here, but my server didn't understand veganism. She mistook it for gluten free. I was, however, informed that many menu items could be made vegan upon request.

The ambiance is all off. With low ceilings and a small space, it's quite loud and echoey.

All that being said, the food was good. The vegan pho's broth was delicious, and the tofu in both the pho and the fried rice was very well cooked. I would recommend if you're weary of spice to ask about the dishes, because they are not all properly labeled.

Overall, a mixed bag. Maybe consider takeout. Although, it's quite expensive, about $20 a plate, so not ideal for that purpose.

Great Pho!

I ordered the vegan pho and loved it. We also ordered an appetizer of spring rolls to share which were good. I loved the peanut sauce they came with. The waitstaff was knowledgeable and answered all our questions (the boba can't be made vegan).

Pros: Labeled vegan options, Lots of choices, Delicious food

Cons: Expensive , Lots of meat on the menu

Amazing place for vegans/vegetarians in Wisconsin!

I've been going to Basil Cafe for years and I can't say enough good things about the place! Everything from their knowledgble staff & highly modifiable menu to their coconut infused water & excellent tea/drink menu is fantastic. They're not a truly vegan/vegetarian restaurant, but many of their menu selections have a vegetable option as their default option and will allow you to add tofu for no extra charge. Anyways, if you haven't checked out Basil Cafe, go ahead and treat yourself to their flavorful vegan/vegetarian menu!

Is the best!

Everything is super fresh and so delicious! But, the last time I ordered I actually wasn't pleased with my meal. First time in 5 years so they still get all the love. ✨

Super filling vegan options

I had the vegan bao bun sliders and they were amazing. The Vietnamese crepe appetizer was huge, could easily be an entree. The vegan chips are my favorite kale chips ever, coated in a peanut sauce. The staff are very helpful and Larry is a cool guy.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Spicy or not spicy vegan options, Good cocktails and beer/wine/boba

Cons: Busy on the weekend

Best Meal in Town

I had zero hopes of finding anything good in Appleton. Luckily, Basil Cafe was there to save the day and the week.

Pad Kee Mao ordered with tofu, no eggs, spice level 4.
Basil Fried Rice, order with tofu, no eggs, spice level 4.

Both dishes were excellent.

I love how knowledgeable the manager and owner were about vegan dishes, and that they could confirm what dishes were or could be modified to be vegan.

Inside is a beautiful space. Very zen with nice feng shui
This is a great spot for veg*ns.

Great food and service

My spouse and I had the Vegan Banh Mi and Vegan Pho respectively. Both were delicious and hit the spot for what we were wanting. The pho had enough food for two meals, and was delicious both rounds!
Since Coivd is ongoing, they are doing pick-up only, and will bring your food out to your car with a request to be wearing a masks when you do. They were extremely friendly and brought the food out quickly when we had arrived.
They do also have non-vegan items, but there are a number items that are vegan or have a vegan option to the item. Highly recommend them!

Most of the menu can be made vegan. Try the Pho, Pad Thai, or Crepe! The servers are very knowledgable about the menu and always very friendly.

Fantastic

Had the Vietnamese Spring Rolls to start. Added the avocado for an extra $1. Wow these things were delicious. For my main course I had the Pad Thai. They took the egg out of it and added veggies and tofu. It was also delicious. I only wish it were spicier. Ordered it at a spice level of 2 out of 4. Should have gone up to 3 or 4 as there was very little heat in mine. Everything at this place seems to be very fresh, and the atmosphere is great as well. It was a Wednesday evening around 7pm when we arrived and the place was packed. Waited ten minutes to sit down, and enjoyed a nice glass of wine at the bar while we waited.

Pros: Staff is very knowledgeable on vegan cooking, and

Amazing Thai/Vietnamese with amazing vegan options

Not only is this some of the best Thai and Vietnamese food that I've had, period, but there are great vegan options- the vegan pho is clearly labelled and super delicious (and enormous- be hungry, ready to share, or ready for leftovers!), and there's a note at the bottom of the menu clearly noting that most of their dishes can be made vegetarian or vegan, just ask (and the waitstaff is very knowledgeable about what that means). The other really standout option that I tried and was thought was sooooo delicious was the Vietnamese crepe, which I've never seen a vegan version of anywhere else (I had to double check that it was vegan, they assured me it was!)- definitely try it!! Other than that we had the veg spring rolls (large, fresh, crisp, tasty peanut dipping sauce), one of the wide rice noodle dishes (flavorful, perfectly cooked veggies, yummy sauce), and for dessert the sticky rice with mango and coconut cream (so creamy and delicious, and the perfect amount of sweet). I wish I had photos but we ate everything too fast- definitely give this place a try if you're in the area, everything was amazing!!

Pros: GREAT food , Lots of options, Nice ambiance, friendly staff
