What a find! - Edit
Discovered Barnacles after recently moving to the area and have been back twice since. They have a whole vegan menu and genuinely the best veggie/ vegan chip shop chips I've ever had. My absolute fave in Llandudno. Lovely staff and speedy service too.

Wish I could go back - Edit
I was amazed by the separate vegan menu they had. Couldn’t believe it. They were very knowledgeable too about the vegan options and I am not 100% sure but it seemed they cooked it separately.
Read moreWe got a battered sausage and chips. They apologised for the sausage being small but we were so happy they had something for us we didn’t bother. Chips were lovely and so was the things we tried on the menu.
I will definitely visit again when I am back to Llandudno!

Extremely Vegan Friendly Chippy! - Edit
Note: Visited 15.09.24. Updated review 08.11.24 to correct grammar mistakes.
Read moreBarnacles are infamous among vegans in North Wales as they make a real effort to cater to vegans. The chippy is divided into a restaurant and takeaway, and during my visit, I decided to sit in. There are variations between menus, so please check both before visiting. Menus can be found on Happy Cow and Google. I have attached pictures of the restaurant menu in this post.
The vegan menu is contained within the menu booklet handed to me by an incredibly lovely waiter (I didn't catch her name, but she deserves a special mention) and there was also a vegan special on during my visit. There is no separate vegan drinks menu, but within the standard drinks menu, vegan drinks are labelled (such as milkshakes and wines). I had the Chocolate Milkshake, which was honestly pretty poor as it had not blended with any ice cream. To eat, I had the Falafel with Chips, Onion Rings, and Vegan Garlic Mayo as a dip. The portions were good, and I really enjoyed the food. I was surprised by how nice the falafel was, considering we were in a fish and chip shop, and the onion rings, although not much to look at, were very tasty! I was too stuffed for dessert, but they had a good selection, and I will perhaps have something the next time I sit in. I am also keen to try some things from their takeaway menu; especially their battered sausages!
Barnacles is a great spot for vegans who are after a chippy with a large selection and respect for their lifestyle. Get yourself down there to enjoy a warm welcome in a laid-back atmosphere!

Nice traditional cafe - Edit
Great spot for traditional chippy lunch. It won’t knock your socks off, but it’s perfectly fine for a filling meal after a Beachwalk. They have plenty of vegan options in their vegan menu.

Really impressed - Edit
I was really impressed to see a full vegan menu and a seperate gluten free menu! It's rare to find , especially in places like a chippy. The chips were really good too! Definitely would visit again, next time we're in Llandudno.

Never judge a book by it's cover! - Edit
I went in here on spec and was amazed to see a dedicated vegan menu. I ordered the lentil and red pepper soup which comes with bread & butter. Unfortunately the butter was dairy and there was no vegan alternative. However the soup was delicious.
Read moreThis isn't the sort of cafe I would usually call into but I saw outside the sign which said vegan and vegetarian options. What a delightful surprise to discover a good choice of vegan options.
There is outdoor seating available, although it's on the pavement with plenty of passes by so not particularly pleasant unless it's a quiet sunny day. But it is Llandudno so beware of the seagulls!

Disappointing - Edit
I think I must have caught Barnacles on a bad day after seeing all the good reviews here. I had a vegan burger, which was dry and tasteless. The chips weren't great either. I appreciate that they have a separate vegan section, but it didn't taste good for me, I'm afraid.

What a great place. Really good service from the chap on the counter. The falafels and chips were lush and we sat outside with the dogs. Can’t fault. Great choice which is so unusual too! Would give a 5* if I could!

Brilliant vegan chippy tea - this northerner approves - Edit
Visited Llandudno on our way back from combing Snowdon and didn’t expect there to be any vegan options. My son and I were thrilled to find this place using the Happy Cow app and sit on the beach with our battered sausage, chips and mushy peas! The place was heaving full of people making vegan orders - fair play to the woman behind the counter dealing with us all on such a hot evening

Lots of vegan options and cooked separately. We had battered sausages, fishfingers and curry sauce. All really good. The chips weren't the best though! A little undercooked hence knocking them down a star. Saying that I would definitely go back.

Disappointing - Edit
Was excited to try this place after hearing about it.
Read moreThey have a separate extensive vegan menu, which is great. The food not so much. I chose sausage and chips. When the food came out the portion was really small and chips didn't even taste cooked properly. Would expect it to be a lot cheaper for what you get. Overall majorly disappointing.
Hopefully some changes are made to improve on these issues as it's refreshing to see a chip shop with any vegan options at all.
Pros: Plenty of options , Separate vegan menu
Cons: Portion size, Value

Chip shops with vegan menus are very rare so brill to find this place. Tasty chips and burgers. Marked down as service was very slow and portions of vegan chips seemed very small compared to the non vegan chips.

Good vegan menu at this chippy - Edit
As others have said, we were extremely delighted but surprised to find a chippy in Llandudno with a vegan menu. We've been a couple of times now and there has always been quite a long queue but it's worth waiting for. The last time we were there, I had the chicken style nuggets with chips and curry sauce and my partner just had the chips and peas. The portions are quite large. We sat on the prom and ate them so it was a very nostalgic feeling eating chips on the seafront. Unusual for vegans these days I would think.
