The absolute best vegan ramen in PDX

My partner and I have made Baka Umai a regular weekend spot for the past 6 months or so, and we absolutely love it. They have pretty extensive vegan options, but we always stick to shoyu and miso ramen, edamame, veggie gyoza, and the tabor tofu. Baka Umai is especially good if you’re a spice fan, as they have fermented habanero, ghost pepper, and Carolina reaper mashes that can be added to any dish. The owner and employees always treat us extremely well. We are never disappointed by Baka Umai!

Pros: Extensive vegan options, including appetizers, Many spicy options for spice heads!

Absolutely delicious:)

They have good vegan options and I love the spicy options. Their shoyu ramen is my go to and my partner loves their miso ramen. The tabor tofu is a yummy starter as well as their veggie gyoza. Staff is friendly as well.

How do you say “pretty darn delicious” in Japanese?

Enjoyed the Baka Bites (deep fried tofu glazed in sweet chili over rice) and the vegan Mazemen (broth less ramen with tofu, onion, peppers and shiitake mushrooms.) Both were delicious and flavorful. There are several other veg and vegan options and the kitchen was willing to make several others vegan if asked. Then non-vegans in my group like the vegan options too. Overall, there are a large number of options and a cool spot on Hawthorn. It’s no T’s Tantan, but it’s up there with the best you’ll find in Portland. I’d definitely come back. They do serve meat 😞, which is too bad. With the menu they have this place would be an easy 5 star as a purely vegan restaurant.

Not Stupid Delicious

I ordered vegan Shoyu ramen (shiitake-blended broth, Tokyo noodles, fried tofu, wood ear mushrooms, fresh cabbage, and menma (bamboo shoots)). It was decent, but definitely not baka umai (Japanese slang for "stupid delicious").

Pros: clearly-marked vegan options

Cons: difficult to find parking
