Fruitveggiegirl

My family and I had delicious & healthy meals at Backbone this week. Three are omnivores and I'm a fruit veggie girl. I had a few choices which made me very happy as it's hard to find somewhere that will cater to all of us. They were super friendly too, not minding my questions at all. I chose the veg curry. I'll be back for more and will try their other options & also their smoothies. I LOVE LOVE that they don't use soy, canola oil, nutritional yeast etc. One can't go anywhere without finding most restaurants use these items. For health & healing they are disastrous. Restaurants don't realize that they lose out if they don't have healthy food as vegans not only take themselves out, but bring their family and friends. Now I have another place to go to. Not too many around!! THANK YOU for your health conscious café. Oh and BTW the décor is so cute.

Pros: Healthy food with no allergens

Overly Salted

I was disappointed with the vegan carnitas here. They were so salty I couldn’t finish it.

Delicious surprise!

The vegan menu is great and the food is delicious. If it wasn't so far from my office in midtown, I'd go more often. I go to lunch with people who are willing to experiment with vegan, but who are still omnivores, so while I wish they would make the leap to vegan, it is nice to have an option where they can choose.

Pros: Good food. , Friendly service

It’s okay

I went here once and wasn’t impressed. Half the menu is meat and half the menu isn’t. They have plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians though. The dish I had (vegan hemp seed and avocado curry) just wasn’t very flavorful. Maybe I just tried the wrong thing or they were having an off day.

As an aside, seeing things like bone marrow on the menu next to the vegan food was off putting.

Pros: Plenty of vegan options

Cons: Not a lot of flavor

Vegan options

Several vegan options in a meat-based restaurant. The name is a bit to stomach but the atmosphere is friendly and a bit noisy. However, the staff is very friendly. This would be a good place to take omnivore friends/family unless seeing them eat flesh bothers you.

Pros: vegan options clearly marked on menu. flavorful.

Cons: Noisy and a bit overpriced

Hi Cara,

This is Valerie. I remember my sister & I meeting you & Brent this weekend at the Vegan Outreach luncheon. I just now looked at your review & immediately realized who you were from your profile picture also, how can I forget the lovely rooster picture you showed us from your phone!) How interesting that I happened to visit our business page just days after meeting you?

Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to review our cafe. We sincerely appreciate the time anyone takes to review us 3. It means a lot to us as a small, family-run business.

Just to clarify on the name of the cafe: We named ourselves Backbone Cafe after my partner (the cafe owner & creator) broke his back at Burning Man 2 years ago. He had such a long road to recovery & it was during this time that we decided upon the name "Backbone Cafe". We do not mean it to be any reference to animal body parts though... just our own human anatomy! :-P.

It was so wonderful meeting you this weekend. The entire event was a success & you were a pleasure to meet! I hope to see you around!
