Slice of luxury in tranquil onsen town

In terms of vegan-friendly establishments, this is a perfect location to be based in when travelling in southern Kumamoto (Kyushu). There is clearly an incredible attention to detail in planning a thoroughly plant-based menu... Both western-style and Japanese-style options are available, but I picked the Japanese-style menu (photos attached).

Optional yoga classes are available in the morning, where you can have a fantastic view of the Kuma River, castle ruins, and sunrise, followed by a vegan breakfast course (both western and Japanese-style options are available here too).

Hot springs are all throughout the area as well, and the hotel even has a shrine dedicated to the gods of the hot springs in front of the hotel, beside an "ashi-yu" (foot bath)... I was spoiled for choice having a private balcony bath with a riverside view in my room but also access to a larger public bath.

After dinner, I definitely recommend making a trip to the bar to try some local cocktails. The perfect nightcap is a cucumber-flavoured drink, but there is also a shochu-based green tea flavoured cocktail that I recommend as well! A local shochu brewer with history going back to the Edo Period (14 generations!) moonlights as the bartender.

vegan course meals at a Japanese style hotel “ryokan” Ayu-no-Sato

It was my first time to try vegan course meals at a Japanese style hotel “ryokan” and the second time to stay at ryokan Ayu-no-Sato. There are two versions of vegan course meal: European and Japanese. So, I chose European. My previous stay I had the normal course, but portions were too big for me so I could enjoy meal except for last three dishes I left over. Being a big fan of hot springs and ryokan I have traveled for many places around Kyushu. Usually ryokan dinner course provide you a choice between two: meat meal and fish meal. So you can enjoy local food only on first part of a meal course (zensai). I am not fully vegan, but prefer vegetables over eating meat and fish. So I was truly enjoying the taste of dishes from the beginning till the end of vegan menu at Ayu-no-Sato. And portions were quite enough for me, I would like even to try the addition course. Dessert reminded me my homeland Russia: it was made from the red beet. I think it shows the level of global knowledge of the chief. Morning yoga at the terrace, healing hot spring “onsen” and vegan course meal. Mind (kokoro), head and stomach. That is all you need for recharge your inner energy. No more no less.

Epitome of Hitoyoshi Hospitality

Ayu-no-Sato is a Japanese style ryokan (hotel/inn) located along Kuma river in the city of Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto, Japan. While not a big hotel, this compact property exudes abundant charm and sophistication. Some of their rooms come equipped with a private outdoor hot spring on the balcony overlooking Kuma river. The Japanese style furnishing is elegant and consistent, with much attention paid to minute details. Vegan course meals are available for both dinner and breakfast, and they are carefully prepared with quality ingredients, most of which are locally sourced, and served continental style, not the "just-take-whatever-vegan-items-you-can-eat" buffet option in most other accommodation facilities. We highly recommend this hotel if one would like to experience good quality Japanese style ryokan.

Pros: Vegan meals are available, Vegan meals taste exceptionally good., Great view and natural hot spring

Cons: None
