Great mains, quick service - Edit
We enjoyed our mains - green curry with mock chicken and stir fried soy fish with salt and chillies. The mock fish wasn’t too fishy which we like but was deliciously crispy. The spring rolls and deep fried wontons were good, but curry puffs were a bit bland. Next time I would skip the entrees to leave more room for mains. There are lots of delicious-looking mains on the menu that I would like to try.

$55 deal - Edit
We had the $55 - 1 entree, 2 mains, rice, 1 dessert. We liked the food and it was a good price. Mock duck wraps for entree were really good. Eggplant claypot needed less sauce and some other vegetables like broccoli, carrot and snow peas. I asked for not spicy and food wasn't spicy which was perfect for my toddler.
Read moreBusy and crowded. Nice vibe. Friendly staff. There was a high chair but no nappy change facilities and we needed them!

Super impressed with the vegan crispy skin duck! - Edit
After being highly recommended to visit Au Lac by a couple of friends that live/have lived in Canberra, I decided to give it a go on this visit. I was super impressed with the vegan crispy skin duck and the corn soup was absolutely delicious and very flavourful. I also had the mushroom fritters which were lovely too, although the batter lacked flavour. And the curry puffs had a delicious subtle curry flavour, although they were not quite cooked long enough. They were still partly frozen in the middle which was a little disappointing and probably the main thing that let them down. Other than that, was still a great meal, would certainly visit again for that delicious vegan crispy skin duck!
Read morePros: All the vegan options!, Vegan crispy skin duck, cooked to perfection!, The corn soup was piping hot and flavourful.
Cons: The curry puffs were still partly frozen., Batter for the mushroom fritter lacked flavour., There’s not one in Albury, NSW where I live!

did not dine royally - Edit
This is a vegan Vietnamese restaurant, which seems to be a family-run business. Their menu is large and it is fun to choose from a variety of dishes.
Read moreThe taste was ok, but also not extraordinary. To be honest, for the name "royal" I would have expected something more refined.
Prices were rather high, although taste, plating and atmosphere did not make up for that… Also ingredients could have been used more generously.
The restaurant is spacious and fits many tables. The storefront is entirely made of glass, so the restaurant feels open and exposed.
Pros: taste ok
Cons: taste could be better, expensive, atmosphere

Extensive vegan selection though I’m not a fan of mock meat so that reduces the options.

Vegan Roast Pork 🔥🔥 - Edit
There aren’t a ton of vegan options in Canberra but if you’re looking for some Asian options, Au Lac is great. My favorite is the roast pork and their fish options is pretty good as well.

Great vegan food - Edit
We’ve been several times before but kept forgetting to take photos. The crispy chicken is always great. The meal sizes are pretty good! We asked for a combination fried rice but ended up with a normal fried rice and my partner didn’t think it was great. I quite enjoyed the dumpling sauce and the duck wraps (forgot to take photo) was quite nice too.

Top spot in Dickson - Edit
What a great restaurant, wish this was local to us. Great restaurant, good vibe, busy, friendly staff.
Read moreIt’s called AuLac Vegetarian but the menu says no dairy and no eggs, so I’m not sure what else is left other than honey maybe but I didn’t see that on there. Menu also says it’s vegan so maybe it used to be vegetarian.
Anyway top spot. Shame we didn’t have the free loaders along as we could have tried more dishes. We had the Lemongrass Tofu, Eggplant in Claypot Sensation and Steamed Berry Brown Rice. Had lol these as Gluten Free.
Green pawpaw salad with tofu was very good and it is a bit of a staple for us.
Lemongrass tofu was very good, good flavour, shredded lemongrass and some chilli on a bed of lettuce. It is deep fried so crunchy outer and soft inner.
Eggplant claypot was also very good, good flavour. Red berry rice was also a nice change, good serving size as 1 portion.
Shared pot of tea being a good size vegan Vietnamese ice coffee (cold) was also good.
Great meal, will go back when in Canberra next, this would be a regular haunt.
We noticed the oil as we don’t cook with oil so I won’t put that as a Con as it is quite normal when we eat out.

Covid Care - Edit
I am in isolation with covid for the week in a place I am unfamiliar with. A delivery order of pho with vegan chicken was exactly what I needed to care for my body. It was so delicious, despite knowing that I would have a different experience if I was dining at the restaurant and the dish was served hot. I will 100% come back and enjoy this meal again. I was really satisfied.

A nice dinner - Edit
I had memories of coming to a restaurant called Au Lac in Canberra many years ago, but I'm not sure if it was this place. It was quiet when we came here mid-evening for dinner on this visit. The menu was large and mock-heavy, and we ordered fried dumplings, the tamarind fish and the stir fry with mushroom sauce and soy beef. The dumplings were quite delicious but gone quickly. We loved that the fish was served with strips of near-raw onion, which gave it some bite. However, we regretted ordering it because the sauce was so sweet, and I should have known better but was momentarily convinced to order it because it was the signature dish. However, the fish was beautifully cooked. The beef in the stir fry was also a nice texture, although it unfortunately lacked flavour, but the dish was generally quite good. Although pretty full, after a brief recovery period, we ordered the banana fritter with ice cream, which was delicious in that crowd pleaser kind of way. I'll be back on the next Canberra visit.
