Lovely South Indian food

This is a great place if you fancy a bit of Indian food. There are plenty of vegan options, including dosa, idli, vada & uttapam plus the usual array of curries. We've travelled a lot in the South of India and this is authentic as it gets. The fact that most of their customers are of Indian origin probably tells you all you need to know. Prices are pretty good too - we spent €25 between the two of us and left very full & very happy!

Pros: Authentic South Indian cuisine, Clearly marked vegan options, Good prices

Amazing Indian food

We came here for dinner every day we were in Paris. The Indian food was amazing and tasted authentic. The service is a little chaotic, but the food comes out quickly and it was very efficient.

Great Indian food

We were here for a stopover at Gare du Nord. Between two long train rides, our late lunch here was very refreshing. We had a little starter, a Thali and a spinach curry. The tastes were the most diverse I’ve had so far in an Indian restaurant. Especially the Thali is a great journey for your tastebuds, with a bunch of different sauces/chutneys.
As mentioned before by others, the service is a bit funny, but nothing to complain about.
Vegan dishes and optional vegan dishes are clearly marked. Gluten-free options, too. Be sure to specify when you order.
Now in for a happy train ride with a full belly.

Lacto-vegetarian chain

Cheap prices for a Parisian lunch, though not the cheapest in this 'Little India' street. They claim to be the "world's no.1 Indian vegetarian restaurant chain"; I can only confirm that the taste does not differ much from its Indian outlets.

Authentic Indian

I had the Vegetable Curry, it came fast and was just what I hoped for. The right level of spicy and a decent portion. I would’ve eaten more if my waiter suggested more options, but no complaints.

Pros: Authentic & popular, Decent service, Good food

Cons: Busy, No English menu , Slow to deliver the bill

Dosa!

Had the Masala Dosa here and enjoyed it so much I ordered another one. It was confirmed to be vegan by two waiters and a guest at the restaurant. The chutneys are apparently coconut based.

I 💚 South Indian food!

This place must have been there forever. I remember a friend taking me there in spring 2016 and again in summer 2021. Back in 2016, this was my first time trying South Indian food. All the Indian restaurants I had been to before were North Indian, so that was a nice change. The type of food is different, but I like it a lot! It has a lot of flavour. Can definitely recommend their dosas! Items that were vegan or could be made vegan (V vs VO) were marked in the menu. (By the way, they claim to be the best Indian vegetarian chain of restaurants - and maybe they are.)

Pros: Many vegan options, Affordable

Cons: "Just" vegetarian

One of the Best South Indian restaurant with a typically bad service

As someone from Southern India, this is one of the best South Indian restaurants I’ve found in Paris serving authentic cuisine and super affordable prices for the serve size. I went through a bunch of comments in this section but one needs to understand that explaining the concept of “vegan” is absolutely imperative and they would happily oblige to make it vegan from my experience thus far as Indian cuisine, although Vegetarian, is far from vegan as Milk and Milk products are critical ingredients in it and substantially fewer Indians really understand the term “vegan” and often confuse it with vegetarian. Furthermore, the restaurant chain Saravana Bhavan is structured around the popular “Darshini” format of restaurants from South India where the service is always bad without a doubt as it isn’t really centered around a fast and quick food service with little obligation to please customers and letting them have any real dining experience so to speak but instead focuses on Good food. While it might challenge the taste palette with capsaicin rich food given its authenticity, it’s still pretty darn good deal for the prices and fairly flavoursome. A few key points you might want to mention are as follows:
• Be sure to explain “Vegan” and not just say it.
• If spicy isn’t your go to thing, be sure to mention it.
• While most food up there is vegan naturally, if you wish to go for the “Thali”, ensure you have explained that you wish to avoid anything with Milk in there.

Bon Courage!😄

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Authentic South Indian food, Willing to accommodate dietary requirements

Cons: Don’t expect a great service in here, Be sure to mention that you don’t like it spicy.

At least it’s all vegetarian !

disapointing and expensive

Service was very slow, the food wasn't tasty and mostly too spicy, didn't feel very fresh.
Expensive for what we ordered (not the dosas but individual veggy plates)

Pros: I love the idea of an Indian vegetarian rest, large menu

Cons: not tasty, expensive

Good food and very fast

The place is located near Gare du Nord and the food took less than 5min to be prepared. I had a simple dish, rice with lentils and vegetables for 7€, which was good and spicy. They have an English menu which is very large but vegan dishes are not labelled.

Pros: Fast, Good food, English menu

Cons: Vegan options not labelled

not convinced

I feel a bit disturbed after having read the other comments - I did enquire about vegan options and had to explain the concept but the waiter seemed to care, and answered seriously... Anyway I was planning to have idlis and dosai, that are generally vegan, as far as I know...
This said, the coconut chutney was a bit bland. Very hot but lacking of something (cardamom? cinammon? lemon? I don't know)

Pros: genuine indian atmosphere, can be packed on a saturday evening

Cons: don't know what "vegan" means (that's suspicious)

Fast indian

You have to know what you are in for: cheap and fast indian food. Dosas are ready in 5 minutes so it's perfect if you have a train to catch at gare du nord.
However service is not nice nor thoughful. It's a fast food joint more than a restaurant.
When they say spicy, they do mean spicy.

Pros: all vegetarian, fast

Cons: staff

Vegans - just avoid it

Had a bad experience here, and I've eaten at the chain around the world. First of all food - we specified vegan, yet a dish was served with (nonvegan) yoghurt and another served with (nonvegan) sambar. Also, there seemed to be some confusion with the servers as to whether the sambar was actually vegan or not. Secondly, service was poor. Finally, the menu stills says tofu in some dishes (as another reviewer noted), when it is paneer- a nonvegan product. Just go to Hank instead!

The Real Deal

Unfortunately living in Israel does not afford access to good or even decent Indian food, to say nothing of vegetarian Indian food. Simply doesn't exist in Tel Aviv, sadly. So I have to get my fix when I travel to Europe or the U.S.

Saravanaa Bhavan is the real deal- the menu more or less consists of South Indian fare. When we went the place was packed with Indians from all over (North, South, West), which is usually a good sign - both for the quality of the food and for the experience. I don't mean that to sound Orientalist - only to say that it's a safe bet to trust the folks who intrinsically "get" the food.

Dosas, thali, various curries and breads - but not strictly South Indian. Everything we tried absolutely hit the spot. Plenty of spice too, which is my thing. Service was a bit chaotic and slow but they were over-busy so we gave them a bit of a pass.

Pros: Authentic, delicious, and fresh food, Pleasant staff

Some of the best Indian food I've ever had.

Amazing surprise. Started out as one of those "whatever, at least it's vegetarian / vegan" type of choices and turned into "I NEED MORE OF THIS IN MY MOUTH NOW". Coming from Berlin good Indian food is very rare in my life, but I highly doubt that this place is sub-standard. If it is - it's still pretty amazing and tasty!

vegans beware of "tofu - it's not

The place has a lot of vegan options, but make sure not to pick anything that has "tofu" in the description of you don't eat dairy: it's ordinary paneer made from cow milk, not tofu made from soy beans. I told the waiter that they should correct that. Otherwise, good authentic Indian food.

Average Food. Poor Service

The location was good and easy to reach. Food was average to bad. The dosas and chole were average and bhatura was good.
But the service was really poor. I needed some special required food and the waiter walked away without listening to me or waiting for me to finish the sentence.
I've been to other saravana bhavan restaurants in Malaysia and the service was really good.
Price is moderate

Pros: Location, Price

Cons: Poor Service

Spicy Indian food in France

Usually I'm disappointed by the Indian food in France because it often seems to be less spicy than usual Indian food. This is a chain that I've visited in several other countries which is always good. Having been in Bordeaux for a few days, and having had problems finding veg food, I was very hungry! Over the several times I visited, I took a South Indian meal, dosa and wada. All were very tasty and spicy! It is good value too. The service was efficient and it was always quite busy.

Typical Indian food in Paris

Food is exactly like the one in India, which is quite rare in our western country. The menu is very large and offers vegan choices if you know them (see below for help). Food is really good but the restaurant is often full (and noisy if so), like in India. It is well located, near Gare du Nord. Because it is sometimes difficult to make you understand by the servers in French, and if you are vegan, here is a list of traditionnal vegan dishes in India (that should be vegan also in this restaurant):

Dosa
Idli
Medu vada
Aloo
Gobi
Batata
Vada
Upma
Poha
Chapati
Roti
Paratha
Poori
Samosa

To be sure you will have no dairy products in what you're ordering, ask to confirm there are no:

Curd/Dahi (yoghourt)
Doodh (milk)
Makkan (butter)
Ghee (clarified butter)
Paneer (cheese)
Malai (cream)
Raita (yoghourt sauce)
Lassi (drink with yoghourt).

Pros: typical indian food, many choices, affordable

Cons: sometimes crowded, beware if you're vegan

Bollygood.

Une carte gigantesque pour des plats tous aussi bons (et copieux) les uns que les autres.
