A worker-owned cooperative bakery and pizzeria, part of a chain of several in the Bay Area. Vegan items clearly labelled. Usually at least a couple baked vegan treats like vegan muffin and vegan cookie, plus a vegan bread - call ahead. Popular with locals. Serves Equator brand coffee. Arizmendi is the shortened name of Jose Maria Arizmendiarrieta, a young priest who inspired and helped found the Mondragon Cooperatives in the Basque Country of Spain in the 1950s. Open Tue-Sun 7:30am-6:00pm. Closed Mon.

Great baked goods - Edit
The chocolate mint cookie is vegan and it’s AMAZING. I could eat a bunch of them. They were a good price too.
Read moreThe vegan focaccia bread was great too but the cookie was top tier.

Not super motivated to make vegan stuff, but the sweet options they have are good - Edit
I've been going to Arizmendi for 15 years and in that time their vegan offerings have not changed at all. They have not added more vegan options or anything of the sort. And the - sorry - lack of inspiration that goes into their vegan focaccias show that they really aren't into it. Having said that, I love their mint chocolate cookies, especially on days where they are on the less cooked side. The lemon poppyseed muffins are great too.
Read morePros: Yummy vegan baked goods, Mint cookies (try to get them less baked)
Cons: Not pro-vegan people, Never any new vegan options, The vegan focaccia could be so much better

Very very good - Edit
I've tried a wide variety of their offerings. The vegan cookies, muffins, scones, and focaccia bread. Everything I've had was very very good. The only downside, they will run out!

Great baked goods - Edit
I got all of the vegan options - vegan focaccia, lemon poppyseed muffin, banana walnut muffin and vegan mint chocolate chip cookie. Everything was delicious and can’t recommend them enough. Definitely don’t miss the cookies!!

Delicious Cookie - Edit
Had a mint chocolate cookie from here and it is one of the best vegan cookies I've ever had. Chewy and chocolatey deliciousness, and quite large too. I also tried some of a friend's banana muffin and that was also very good in texture and taste.

Vegan muffins! - Edit
Vegan muffins are hard to come by in SF but arizmendi usually has two varieties: banana walnut and lemon poppy. I’m not usually a fan of lemon poppy so I typically go with banana walnut. However, both flavours are great in their own right.
Read moreThey also have excellent sourdough breads and rolls. Order ahead so you can skip the awful queues!
Pros: Vegan muffins
Cons: Long queues

Amazing Scones! - Edit
It's hard to beat their scones, particularly the cranberry and corn!
Read moreI wrote the above while still vegetarian. Still true, they were very good, but I do wish they had more vegan options and were at least 100% vegetarian. I have found vegan scones I like even better than these though in the Bay Area.

🥖🍞🧁 - Edit
Almost always have a vegan focaccia, vegan muffins (banana walnut or lemon poppyseed), and a vegan cookie (chocolate mint). Some of the other breads are vegan too but it’s good to double check, the ingredients are usually on display. Had a artichoke heart and kale focaccia from there once and it was pretty smack!

Love the vegan muffins - Edit
Nice place to stop in for a vegan muffin or cookie. The bread is good too.

I love bread - Edit
I loved going here before I was vegan, and I still love this place....even though it's not all vegan. I love bread even more than Oprah does, and they got the goods. That said, sometimes on weekends the line can be out the door, and then it's tricky to figure out what you want since it's small inside you have to maneuver around the people in the queue. I recommend that you check their website before visiting and look for the rotating bread schedule, they also list which items are vegan on their website (https://www.arizmendibakery.com/bread). You wouldn't want to go all the way to the bakery hoping to get pumpernickel only to find out you should have gone on a Thursday. They are closed every Monday.

not enough options - Edit
There aren't a lot of vegan choices. Only 1 vegan cookie. Sometimes there is a vegan focaccia, but not always.

great bakery - Edit
I go here often because the bread is the best. Some of it is vegan. They also have one or two varieties of vegan muffins, and some wonderful vegan chocolate mint cookies. They usually have one kind of vegan foccia as well. It would be even better if they ditched the oil, which for some reason they drizzle all over the foccia. It’s a mess, an adds unnecessary calories.

Cons: the oil on the foccia

Great Bakery and Center of Sunset - Edit
This bakery is a breath of fresh air. They have vegan and vegetarian options only and their baked goods are extremely high quality, generously portioned, and the ambience is the best. I wish they had one in our neighborhood. I would quit work.

Yummy Muffin, good coffee - Edit
I like good fresh baked goods, so it's not difficult for me to find reasons to like this place. Read about it on happycow and decided that I had to come check it out. Was here in October 2012, here's my Arizmendi Bakery review.
Read moreSeemed like quite a popular place with the locals. Lots of people grabbing something to go, some eating outside. the pizza of the day is written on a chalkboard (always with dairy unless you make a special advanced order for a whole pie).
You'll find lots of fresh baked breads and pastries, few labeled as 'gluten-free' and a few labeled as 'vegan.' I got the vegan banana-nut muffin, a vegan apricot cookie, and their coffee (Equator brand). Everything was yummy, including the coffee.
Would definitely come back again next time I'm in the area.

Probably the best bakery in SF - Edit
This is my neighborhood bakery. My boyfriend and I go there at least 3 times a week. The focaccia is the best, usually they have a vegan option as well. Really good coffee too. All organic ingredients, really yummy. I recently went gluten free and Arizmendi is the one thing I still crave daily.
