Wide variety of local and organic produce

I used to go to Whole Foods whenever I visited Ann Arbor, but only recently discovered Arbor Farms. Such a nice difference - non-corporate and a relief from the rip off prices at WF. It is now I would say cheaper for the most part compared to WF, which has just turned into one giant money gouging machine.

And Arbor Farms now has more local and organic produce than WF (I do not go to health food stores to buy conventional produce sold at higher prices than a normal grocery store after all !!!).

Support this independent store. It has better prices, and a better choice for local & organic veg ! Lots of the other options like healthy potions, lotions and pills, vegetarian proteins etc. for the same or cheaper than WF. And without the evil corporate eye watching you. WF drove out independent health food stores by under cutting their prices to get where they are today, then raised their prices like crazy after driving out competition across the country. And for that I will always detest them and support an independent health food store when I can. And this one is better in any case.

Pros: Wide choice of organic & local produce, Decent prices compared to other similar , stores.

Best locally owned grocery in town

Arbor Farms is my favorite grocery store in Ann Arbor, and their hot-food counter is fantastic. I recently bought their weekly special, which was a vegetarian Reuben with marinated tempeh, sauerkraut, onions, and vegan dressing. It was excellent. If they don't have a similarly veggie-friendly special when you're there, buying one of their chickpea walnut burgers (vegan warning -- it has eggs) and crumbling it atop a side salad is always a good bet. The homemade balsamic dressing is awesome.

For out-of-towners, this is a good chance to sample some locally grown food. It's cheaper than Plum Market, and the hot-food options are MUCH more vegetarian friendly.

Pros: Local produce, Great hot bar, Locally owned

Good selection, but expensive

Arbor Farms has a great variety of most anything you'd want to find in a grocery store or a health-food store. They also stock a lot of local products (e.g. local tortillas, tofu, etc). Unfortunately, they rarely carry local produce. Most of their items are more expensive than at the People's Food Coop or Whole Foods. It's good to support this locally-owned store though!

Pros: wide selection, friendly staff

Cons: expensive
