sweet cream bread!! - Edit
this place doesn’t have enough recognition on happy cow. they have a lovely assortment of vegan baked goods to choose from, and i’d get here early to ensure you get what you want. i got the sweet cream bread, an onion bread, and a chocolate kind of bread. i don’t know the names of any but i sure needed a baked good and they truly exceeded expectations. wish i’d have gotten more!

I think it might be permanently closed. - Edit
I rode my bike down twice about a week or more apart. The first time some construction was happening. The next time it was just abandoned. I also didn’t get a response from the owner😒

I got here late so I couldn't try the chocolate filled bum. I tried a couple waffles and got a soy macha latte.

Very expensive - Edit
We only got take-out and the food was nice, but it was really expensive. Also, they mostly had sweet options. The only savory stuff they had were full loaves and a small sandwich. The custard filled buns were incredibly nice though.

Delicious Vegan Breads! - Edit
There are so many types of bread, all of them are very delicious, so I really don't want to share it with my travel companions! I arrived at noon that day, but some of the bread was empty already, so I recommend you going to there in the morning. Also, if you are not in a hurry, you can eat in. The store is actually quite big. Sit down and taste it slowly. It feels good too!

I want to live here - Edit
This bakery is an absolute treat. They had such a variety of sweet and savory baked goods, including chocolate chip bread and other pastries that are packaged to take home. I wanted to try one of everything, so it was easy for me to spend too much. The labels are in Japanese, but most of the food seemed fairly self-explanatory. When you check out, you can choose to eat in or take your food to go; if you eat in, be mindful to remove your shoes before entering the back dining area. I wish I was close enough to come here every day.

This place is a gem! - Edit
Apelila is an amazing place to go. My girlfriend and I went there and got the Lunch menu, which is a plate of breads with different filling and topping. It also came with a salad and a soup (both were great, but the soup is amazing). It was so good that we then went and bought bread filled with cream with chocolate chips on top and 2 little pizza like bread for Diner.

Amazing Bakery! - Edit
This place is so great, I loved everything I tried there and the bread based lunch plate is an excellent option. My favourite was probably the chocolate filled bread closely followed by the soy cream pineapple bread. They also make a delicious soy matcha latte and a soy cocoa and it's a lovely cosy place to sit and hang out with a friend.

We had the most delicious pastries here. The shop/bakery itself is super cute and trendy, you can eat in with great soy milk coffee. Perfect for breakfast. It’s a must try if your in Kyoto. Enjoy!

Lovely place - Edit
This little place is simply lovely. It's cozy, the food and drinks are tasty and the owner super nice. However, everything is in Japanese, so you might have to guess a little, or maybe ask the owner for help (not sure if she speaks English) in case you don't speak Japanese.

Just... wow! - Edit
This was our first stop in Kyoto. After seeing amazing looking sweet buns and breads all over Tokyo, we had to get our hands on some vegan ones. We walked in and it was heaven. Buns EVERYWHERE. We had 5 or 6 large buns (that were heated up for us) with a latte and green tea latte. Each bun was phenomenal. We had one with mushrooms and onions, one stuffed with delicious curry vegetables, one with sweet red bean paste in it... and so many more. We also got to go items, including cookies and more buns. The inside of the bakery is beautiful and spacious, the kind of place you could bring a book and spend hours. Staff were extraordinarily nice and explained what was in the buns. This has been one of the best experiences of our trip, don’t miss it.

Disappointed - Edit
We took a train to the north of kyoto just to go here only to find that it was closed even though it was 1pm within opening hours on a friday. We were looking forward to going here after reading great reviews and were very disappointed (and hungry) when we found it to be closed. There was no sign to explain the closure and we even waited a while to see if it opened. Thank god we found Falafel Garden just around the corner to fix our hunger.

Delicious Bread! Matcha Latte - Edit
I loved this cozy bread shop. I tried a variety of their breads and all were delicious. I also had the matcha latte (it is hard to find this with soy milk other places) and the hot cocoa. The drinks were a little too sweet, but still high quality and tasty. I highly recommend visiting here a few times : ) This is a nice area of Kyoto to get away from the busy streets. The staff is also extremely friendly.

Incredible food and amazing staff - Edit
Vegan bread is tricky to come across in Japan, so I was so excited when I saw Apelila on Happy Cow. It did not disappoint. We chose a selection of buns and cakes, some to take away and some to have in the bakery's cafe section. The baker was friendly and lovely, and she gave us freshly made soy cream (which she makes in the bakery herself) and strawberries to have with our cake. It was delicious food and a really charming experience to shop and eat there.

Stock Up Here! - Edit
We all know that being vegan in Japan can be challenging, and even though Kyoto is the vegan capital of Japan (if not of all of Asia) it can still be difficult to find food between meals, or for breakfast if you can't make it to Cafe Choice.
Read moreSo I highly recommend stocking up at Apelia on goods to take hiking or just walking around Kyoto. It's all baked fresh and feels natural and healthy, so guess it won't last more than a couple of days, so next time I come to Kyoto I'll stock up here as often as needed, and more for wherever I go the next time.
Pros: vegan baking, friendly and welcoming staff and interior, delicious!!!
