limited vegan options

As a longtime vegan (strict vegetarian) I recently visited the Angkor Cambodian Café.

Eugene has many vegan/vegetarian restaurants and yet I still love supporting local ethnic restaurants that may not be exclusively vegetarian yet offer many options.

I recently completed a meditation course in Northern California where about half the people who sat the course were Cambodian and the majority of the food served was Cambodian food prepared loving by Cambodian people. The meditation course was completely lacto-vegetarian with plenty of vegan options and the Cambodian food was completely vegan. I loved the Cambodian food at the course and was probably some of the most unique as well as tasty food I've ever had.

The Angkor Cambodian Café doesn't have any vegan entrees on their large meat based menu. I feel this isn't a true representation of the country's cuisine. The staff did offer us a pho tofu vegetable noodle soup that was completely vegan yet this was ordered off the menu and we also had the salad rolls as an appetizer. They normally came with shrimp and yet simply had them without shrimp for the same price. This doesn't make sense as shrimp is expensive and could have substituted tofu. The pho was fine and the salad rolls okay.

On the upside loved the photographs of Cambodia and Angkor Wat capturing the raw beauty of nature as well as the people that radiate joy. Kudos for the unique Cambodian artwork throughout the café adding character to the dining experience.

All in all I would go back in a heartbeat with friends if there was more vegan or vegetarian options as I know Cambodian cuisine has the potential to make some of the best vegan or vegetarian food anywhere. Eugene has a sizeable vegan and vegetarian community so feel Angkor Cambodian Café can do quite a bit more expanding their menu to serve this population. For now I see too many other great dining out options in Eugene to go back anytime soon for this very reason.

Pros: nice ambience

Cons: limited vegan options

Authentic Cuisine to please the adventurous palate

Unassuming mom and pop shop provide authentic taste that is rich and flavorful. Lunch special comes with 2 chicken wontons that cannot be substituted however. Additional sides include rice and salad with vibrant dressing. Curries, noodles, fried rices all can be made with tofu.

Pros: Rich flavor and texture, Original Khmer art and Angkor Wat photography , Coconut milk dairy

Cons: Small portions, No lunch special substitutions
