We found the restaurant to be alive and kicking, however they seem to be struggling financially, as they said it's hard to be an all-veg restaurant in Seville. Well, maybe it would help if they paid more attention to the atmosphere they create: not only did we find some spider web, which I didn't care about, the lighting was inexistent during most of our dinner.
The food was nicely presented, not fabulous but it did the trick for me, with the exception of the desserts, none of them suitable for vegans. My girlfriend warns that the hamburger was plain and tasteless.
I ate here in early May 2010 with my vegan wife and our vegan Spanish friend. The place itself, located on the hip and happening Alameda de Hercules, is inviting, with modern decor. The menu has a lot of intriguing things, featuring a good deal of seitan and some fried offerings. I found the food delicious (I am an omnivore), but the vegans at the table were not thrilled that the ubiquitous sides - mashed potatoes, a dollop of cream with the fries - weren't vegan. Many of the entrees were not vegan either. Still, I recommend a trek out to the Alameda during your stay and a meal here.
I've eaten here a couple of times - alone - in the last two weeks. The first time was wonderful, which is why I went back! The second time, not so wonderful...
On my first visit I had tempura vegetable (listed as a starter) and then vegetable spaghetti 'bolognese'. The vegetable tempura was vast (much more filling than the 'main course' spaghetti) but was delicious, with a lovely tomato-based sauce. The spaghetti was fine - nothing overly special, but nice. Service was prompt; the waiter was friendly and efficient.
The second time I went to Almanera, it was a different story. The waitress sat down chatting with a group of her friends and ignored everyone for ages - I eventually managed to catch her eye (only from the next table!) to order a drink...
This time I ordered two starters instead of a starter and a main: tempura vegetables again (they were so scrummy last time) and something that I really can't remember, but which was fine. The tempura vegetables came with a different sauce - not so nice, and really cold (although I seem to remember the first time it was warm) and the vegetables (or the batter, more likely) were SO salty they were virtually inedible, and even the next morning I had a raging thirst. I know I should have complained, but I didn't have the confidence in Spanish to complain to a waitress sitting at a table full of her friends...
Had I just been the first time to Almanara, I would have recommended it without hesitation. Now, perhaps not. Both times were in the evening, by the way.
i had expected much more of a 4 out of 5 happy cow review place... i found the menu not attractive, unhealthy looking : a lot of soja, vinegar and gluten and not many veggies, parmesan cheese (the worst for the kidneys) everywhere! it seemed like a person who had stopped eating meat but forgot to reinvent his style into the happy and healthy veggie world, simply added soja and dropped the meat. when i asked for a replacement of the pasta in pasta bolognaise (8 euro) with the seafood pasta from another dish (10 euro) i was charged 11 euro in the end that i felt a little overrated... the area is great for shure.
The place is not far from the Hercules towers and a nice evening strolling area.
I was there in January and found it a little nippy and very quiet inside. The decor was kind of trendy but I found the side wall lighting too in ya face bright.
Being unable to read the very small print of the Spanish menu, we were presented with an equally small printed English version.
The waiter had to check on vegan options and was unclear as to what vegans could and could not eat which didn't bode well. However when the food arrived (promptly) we were impressed.
Of the 3 places we ate, foodwise this was the best. I had Veggie spaghetti bolognaise and that alone would prompt me to return. There was a disabled access toilet but this was obstructed.
I would eat here again.
This was an unexpected hip and modern place with a very professional look and feel. They healthied up our selections and I had a wonderful Veg burger decked out with fresh salad and veggies. I would definitely go here often. Very impressive and friendly.
Alamanara has a good location on a large square in north-central Sevilla, with both indoor and outdoor seating.
The menu is lacto-ovo-vegetarian (no meat), with several vegan options (and others that can be made vegan upon request). They serve olives and a bread basket before the meal (and the bread is said to be vegan).
An English menu card is available upon request. The server spoke some English and was helpful in identifying the vegan options.
Prices are quite reasonable by local standards (around 10 euros for a main dish).
I'm not sure why Almanar is listed as not 100% vegetarian, because there wasn't any meat on their menu last night and their menu declares that they're an "espacio veggie."
Anyway, this is the best vegetarian food we've had in Spain so far. Beautiful presentations of wholesome, tasty food that's not characteristically Spanish, but oh so good.
It was nice to see a veggie restaurant getting so much business, too.
We will eat there again.
