Great Food - Edit
This place is so good. Been twice now and will go back any chance we get.
Read moreThe only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is due to the fact that they still don't offer dine-in, which can make eating here a little inconvenient if youre out and about.
Pros: Delicious, Reasonable Prices
Cons: Carry-out only

This is a Five Star Restaurant for Vegans - Edit
If you like Indian food, you will love this restaurant! I was skeptical about trying Ethiopian food, never having had it before I didn't know if it was too "weird" for me - but thank the gods I have good friends who showed me the light! I love Indian food and this was similar. I tried about every dish on the vegan buffet and I swear - it was all delicious! I came back for dinner a week later with a group and we ordered the family style platters and absolutely every single thing on them was heavenly! The service was friendly and efficient (although we were told we were going to get individual plates to scoop the food from the platters onto, but they never came. Who cares! Eating out of the big family platter was just fine!) Eating with your hands, tearing off the bread and pinching just the right bite-sized portion into the bread, pop it into your mouth - new experience for me and it was wonderful. Everyone loved the food, no one said they didn't like this or that. I can't wait to go back. And the fact that the lunch buffet was all vegan garners my highest rating - Five Stars!

Meh - Edit
I wasn’t impressed. I’m guessing things may be “off” due to COVID. The worker did say that one dish (fasolia) was only available for dine-in, but the restaurant was carryout only, so… Plus, she had an attitude about me even asking.
Read moreThe vegetable plate I got only came with gomen, tikkil gomen, misir wot and alitcha. It was ok, but nothing memorable. There was more injera than there was food, which is a far cry from the hefty portions you get at other Ethiopian restaurants. I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again.

Favorite in MKE - Edit
I go here almost every time I am in town. I get the collard greens and the vegan chickpea dumplings (cooked like fish stew) most of the time. Everything is delicious and I end up eating until I can’t walk straight. The vegan buffet has a lot of the normal dishes but with potatoes subbed in for chickpeas and lentils, but I still try to catch it when I can. Staff is always very nice.

a Milwaukee classic - Edit
All-vegan lunch buffet for $9 - what more could you ask for? Choose from 8 or so dishes of spicy or mild vegetables, grab a scoop of fluffy white rice or a few rolls of tangy homemade injera, and visit the cooler table to build your own vegetable or fruit salad. For dinner, try the shimbra asa - delicious little chickpea flour fritters stewed in a sea of their delightfully spicy, berbere-heavy red sauce. Service is great, prices are great, food is truly amazing every time. Not to be missed!

I love Alem's. The food is absolutely delicious and the base of each dish is basically vegan, with optional meat. The buffet is the best because every single thing on it is vegan and tasty.

Delicious and great atmosphere - Edit
Very clean and welcoming atmosphere. Great music, friendly staff. My server was terrific and took great care of me. He taught me how to eat with the Injera (Ethiopian flatbread) and explained what I was eating. I enjoyed reading about the owners. Also, it was fun to eat with my hands.

great lunch buffet - Edit
Not the most amazing Ethiopian food I've ever had... But it was very good! My husband, who is a burger kind of guy even enjoyed the lentils and the collards. We went at lunch time and I had the buffet. They almost had to roll me out, I was so stuffed! But the buffet is all vegan, so no guilt! The waitress was pleasant, and politely explained to my husband why she didn't bring him silverware. (I was too busy stuffing my face to try to teach him.) The atmosphere is pretty casual, all tables in an open room.

Best vegan lunch buffet - Edit
The lunch buffet is all vegan, extremely reasonably priced, and soooooo delicious. This is one of my favorite places to eat in the city - if we're there for dinner my husband and I share the vegetarian sampler, and if I'm going for lunch I always get the buffet. The staff is also super friendly and very knowledgeable about veganism, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask!
