Serves meat, vegan options available. Also using the name Al Vegano for delivery, this burrito bar & Mexican food restaurant operates a few outlets in Manhattan. Has a separate extensive vegan menu with all kinds of dishes. Uses vegan cheese and sour cream, tofu, and mock meats like vegan chicken, steak, and chorizo. Order in store or on Grubhub under the Al Vegano name. Open Mon-Thu 10:30am-9:30pm, Fri-Sat 10:30am-10:30pm, Sun 10:30am-9:30pm.

Surprisingly good! - Edit
Are there more authentic Mexican places nearby? Of course, especially if you’re willing to hop on a quick train into Sunset. But this place is surprisingly good, and you get an absurd amount of food for your money. It’s kind of cali-mex style food (brown rice for example) but everything tastes good. It kind of reminds me of Blockheads back in the day before Blockheads became really gross and expensive. If you want a ton of fun vegan analog foods (fake cheese/sour cream, different types of TVP or tofu, etc) this is not a bad local option at all. BUT YOU HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT THE SECRET MENU!
Read moreThis is actually kind of baffling. If you walk into the storefront to eat in or carry out, you’ll see they have a few vegan options, including a tofu and some veggies for tacos and burritos, but nothing extensive (no dairy analogues, no mock meat). That’s because Al Horno operates an exclusively vegan kitchen called “Al Vegano,” which is, weirdly, advertised online for take out but not in the storefront. There are even different websites for the two different restaurants, and they’re represented as two different places on delivery apps. If you’re ordering delivery or carry out in advance, use Al Vegano.
If you eat in, you won’t see any evidence of Al Vegano in the restaurant…. But those who know about the secret menu are welcome to order off of it, so bring your phone along and make sure you’re viewing all of the wider options they offer under the other name.
I have no idea why they do this. When I asked, the people working also had no idea. I wish they didn’t… they could at least put up a sign to ask about the vegan menu! But as long as this info is on a “need to know” basis for some reason it felt like it was worth explaining in this review. If I hadn’t been hearing about this place for a long time before trying it (and heard the Al Vegano name in a local Bay Ridge Facebook group for vegans) I would not have figured out to search for the other menu and connect the two places.
Pros: Lots of vegan options, Shockingly huge portions , Takeout doesn’t suffer reduced quality
Cons: Vegan menu is hidden under a different name , Not authentic Mexican food but still good

Solid and filling burritos - Edit
I order the burrito with vegan chorizo and it is delicious and a very substantial dinner. The mashed beans add fiber and protein. The chipotle sauce is great.
