Not so great for vegans

I went here during lunch time. They offer a vegetarian meal but when I asked for a vegan meal I got the feeling that they didn't really know what I meant. I got two curries and a lot of rice. At 970 yen it's quite cheap thougg

Pros: Not many options

Cons: Cheap

Vegan options available

A convenient option to get a vegan lunch or dinner (you have to ask for it). Staff speaks english and knows what vegan means. Lunch set curry with a huge Naan, yellow rice and salad costs ¥1000. It was tasty, but nothing special.

Good Indian!

Lots of vegetarian dishes to choose from, helpful staff, yummy food, a good amount of spice and heat in the food. Naan was fresh and yummy. A bit hard to find - it's in the basement of the Castle Plaza, which is a hotel. It's actually directly down from the main train station so should have been easier to find. Would go again.

Not so comfortable

I have only gone here once, and I appreciate they offering vegan menu (I think there was a few selection).
A bit difficult to communicate with waiters as they did not speak much Japanese nor English, and did not quite seem to understand what Vegan food is.

Pros: Location - 5 min walk from Nagoya stn

Cons: Smoking , Did not feel clean, Food not so good

Good Indian Food!

I never thought that I was going to eat so much Indian food here in Japan, but unfortunately it is one of the few places that you can find vegetarian food. Every time I have gone to Akbar has been a success :-)

Pros: Vegetarian Options , Close to my hotel

Cons: not many vegetarian options

Rock Solid

I've been coming to this Akbar since 2002 (there is another one in Fushimi/Sakae as well). I found it purely by accident while wandering back to Nagoya Station from the International Center.

In addition to having a dedicated vegetarian menu (varied but not particularly original, don't expect dosai, idli etc), Akbar is vegetarian friendly to the extent that they even have a Vegetarian plate on their daily teishoku (fixed) menu. This plate consists of two different curries (usually a palak paneer and either a potato based curry or a dal) and is accompanied by a small salad, sweet yogurt and either naan or rice and followed up by a drink of choice (including lassi or chai). The teishoku lunch is fast and filling.

Overall the food is on the rather spicy side but certainly not painful. The default level is enough to raise a sweat for the occasional spice-head and spicy enough to prevent complaints from a hardened chili master. Heat level can be adjusted on request. The dishes are all well seasoned and the naan is massive. The chai is heavy on the tea leaves, rich and pungent - just the way I like it.

Service is competent, not overly friendly but fast, efficient and patient of requests. Many of the staff speak some degree of English for those without Japanese.

The only downside to Akbar is that there is a smoking section and no amount of good will can prevent smoke from stinking up the place if there are a number of smokers.

Nevertheless, Akbar have become a permanent fixture on my trips to the city and is well worth the slightly longer than short walk from Nagoya station.

Pros: Varied Vegetarian Menu, Well seasoned, Vegetarian Teishoku!

Cons: A bit smoky, Could use a little more variation., Slightly pricy (but not overpriced)
