Unique options but just okay taste - Edit
It was cool to try okonomiyaki because we otherwise wouldn't have been able to, but we actually found it pretty unappetizing once we actually got it. I found the mock pork inside of it quite off-putting. But this could just be personal taste. The tofu and radish salad was pretty big, so therefore a good deal, but wasn't very tasty in our opinion. The fried tofu ("fish and chips") was also just okay. Really not sure why they call it fish and chips though -- it's just fried tofu. Everything was too expensive considering the portion sizes.

Very Quaint, Great Food - Edit
The overall atmosphere of this place is very quiet and peaceful, and barring the drinks with honey in them it’s completely vegan. My friend and I tried the okonomiyaki and several of the appetizers(including the “chicken” karaage) and all of them were very flavorful and true to the original taste to the point that it didn’t even taste like it was vegan. The soy ice cream is also very good. Overall, I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a nice dinner. On a side note, the lunch menu is different than the dinner menu so keep in mind that if you come before 5:30 then you can only choose between burgers and bento boxes.

Delicious - Edit
I can't stress how delicious the okonomiyaki is! I went with a non-vegan Japanese family and they all enjoyed it as well and seemed surprised with how it is similar to the original.
Read moreWe also tried the skewers which were great. If you don't mind oily food, you will love it.

Satisfying fusion food - Edit
Great range of items. Felt very satisfied afterward. Leans toward faux products over new flavour combinations. The lasagne was very realistic! The yakatori was tasty and generous. Cheeses tasted homemade not store bought, a good thing. Would have liked to see more interpretations of Japanese cuisine but that's just personal!

Vegan okonomiyaki - Edit
Large menu for such a small place. Tapa like items. The cheese has a very curry taste and stringy but not your typical "cheesy" flavor but that was fine with me. The okonomiyaki was very good, fun to get traditional Japan food in vegan version, has a little too much mayo for my liking.

Comfort food - Edit
If you need something a bit comforting to eat come here. We had the okonomiyaki and vegan rice paper lasagne. Both were excellent and just what we needed after living off rice for a few days. Looks like there is one guy running the whole thing so very impressed. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the lighting was a bit in your face. But I would still recommend if you need some yummy comfort food.

the food was very good - Edit
it's a small, cozy setting and the food is excellent. very very tasty, and vegan for absolutely the most part (didn't scan the entire menu though as I/we knew pretty quickly what i/we wanted)
Read moreto reiterate, the tastiness of the food is fantastic. and it's relatively cheap to boot.
slightly smaller than ideal portions, but this is a seemingly a common trait at Japanese vegan restaurants. as it's pretty cheap, get a dessert and/or appetizer and you should be fine. a cool vegan fake squid appetizer was worth it, and the avocado chocolate cake was amazing. it's the main dishes that were really out of this world awesome though.
Pros: great taste, good value , fun location
Cons: smallish portions, a little chilly (a 'very cold' winter day

Vegetable Kitchen Bar Aju, Osaka - Edit
Some points to clarify from the current listing details (update submitted a moment ago for HappyCow HQ to correct:-
Read more1) The correct name listed on the sign at the resto door is:-
Vegetable Kitchen Bar Aju
2) There's honey on the menu so it isn't all vegan
It seems to be a one person operation (more power to the guy's elbow if that is indeed the case). The food was great. It's pretty easy to find with GPS from either Nakazakicho & Tenjimbashisuji Rokuchōme subway stations.
If this place was all vegan I'd defo rate it a 5.
Pros: Vegan friendly, Great tasting food
Cons: Shame about the honey

Great corner in one of Osaka's best neighborhoods - Edit
I stopped by Aju just to grab a bento box to take home (vegan hamburger with their homemade vegan cheese spiced with coconut and served with brown rice, salad, and deliciously seasoned eggplant, all for only ¥550), and will certainly be going back there again to try out their whole menu.

Awesome Osaka Find! - Edit
We made a little detour on the way back from Universal Studios to try Aju and I'm so glad we did!
Read moreDon't be discouraged by the fact this looks like someone's home, the food is well worth it. We had the avocado fritters, salad and assorted vegan chicken, all incredibly tasty and served by lovely staff.
Finished things off with a soy soft serve with secret cornflakes underneath and picked up some cookies to take home. Definitely give this place a try!
Pros: All vegan, Vegan soft serve, Friendly staff

The staff and setting were very nice, there is a little shop where you can buy meat substitute, nutritional yeast, etc... But I think the food was a bit expensive, the pizza especially was very small and we got out still hungry.

Disappointing food quality - Edit
With high expectations, my partner and I dropped by Aju for lunch. Given the many positive reviews, we were quite excited but only to be disappointed with the food.
Read moreThey have three lunch bento sets, my partner ordered the soy and tofu hamburger set and I ordered the daily special bento.
They both was poor in quality. Seemed to lack proper planning and preparation of the food. First of, the burger was dry with overly salted sauce. The side dishes were unappetizing to look at. The daily special was some kind of white sauce vegetable stew. It was bland in taste and again unappealing to the eyes.
Overall, it felt like we were eating airplane food. Or the kind of food you could grab quickly from a convenience store. Very poor in quality.
Perhaps we just had bad luck that day but we definitely won't go back unless we are desperate for food.
Pros: Cheap, easy to find
Cons: poor quality , lack of taste

Osaka Gem - Edit
Truly a vegan / vegetarian gem buried in Osaka. Small and cozy. Full English vegan menu. Even calls out honey if it is used (only looks to be used in certain alcoholic beverages). Had the fried soy chicken, Caesar salad, sphalerite with "meat sauce", and assorted soy chicken Yokitori (skewers). Such a relief to find this restaurant in a sea of non-veg places... Great food! Highly recommend!

Definitely a repeater! - Edit
In between Umeda station and Tenjinbashisuji Rokuchoume station so very centrally located. Went several times and the food is always fabulous. Kimchi soy meat is delicious and so are the doria (rice with soy meat, vegetables, tomato sauce and vegan cheese). Local vegetables you've never heard of are on the menu. Well priced, also possible to take two starters or so and only one main dish with two people. Free tap water, as always in Japan.

delicious and filling! - Edit
Went to Aju in May 2014, and was really impressed. The food was very good, really reasonably priced and very imaginative. The owner even commented on the ingredients whenever he brought a dish over, things like "this mayonnaise contains no egg" or "this dessert is made with kanten and yuzu", so it was really nice to hear more about the food. You can also buy some vegan groceries in store, such as fake meat pieces, vegan mayo and matcha cookies. The restaurant is very small (seats 10 people, max) so do book in advance if you can. We will definitely be going back.

Tastiest budget dinner in Osaka - Edit
Two minutes on foot from Nakazakacho station. If you were not told beforehand the meals were vegetarian, you would never know the difference. Full of flavor and loads of menu options. Extremely reasonable prices and one of the few vegan cafes you can dinner items for under 1000yen。 Boxed lunches are an amazing 500yen! Has the feel of a cozy izakaya, but better food than you would ever find at a real one.
