Amazing bento

First time I tried a bento box and I loved it. I was really hungry so was really excited to see this HappyCow pinpoint close to me. The lady was really friendly (make sure to specify no eggs if you are vegan). Since she was closing up I just took it as a take-away and ate it in a park nearby. I loved the box, so many fresh and great flavours. Also got a nice box filled with cabbage and bamboo shoots and a sort of soup. Additionally even a whole chunk of Taiwanese tea. I only had to pay 80TWD which to me felt a little bit like a steal. They also have other items on the menu but since I came near closing time they were sold out. Payment was in cash.

Pros: Very tasty, Friendly lady

Loving family

I didn’t know what to expect when I came across this place on Google Maps. For one, the location is completely wrong, so instead of a 12-min walk from where I was staying, I also had to turn around and retract my steps and beyond for 22 more mins to reach their actual address, which is on their Facebook Page. The hours listed on Google and Facebook do not reflect when they actually serve bentos: they only do that during the weekday lunch hours.

So when I showed up at 9:30am and asked for a vegan bento, they didn’t have anything ready. Instead, they offered some noodles that they were preparing for a big group breakfast. I was happy to go along with it. I could taste the fact that they stew their soup for hours to get a rich flavor: they use sugar cane, corn on the cob, konbu, and mushrooms.

They really aren’t set up for people to dine in, but they let me sit at a cluttered table while plying me with fresh fruit, tea, snacks, and condiments of all sorts. They also gave me a brochure for visiting a Foguangshan museum. I politely declined the shaqima snack since it was ovo-lacto.

I would return when I’m visiting Kaohsiung to try their beautiful-looking bentos for lunch!

Pros: sweet family owners, vegan option available, complimentary barley tea

Cons: only open for lunch on weekdays, not set up for dining in
