yummy rice bowls and pancakes!

the impossible ricebowl is delicious, especially when doused in their sweet chilli sauce. it’s a bit pricey at $12.90 (vege rice bowl is only $8.80) but worth having every now and then.

i LOVE their pancakes (man jiang kueh)! biscoff is my favourite flavour, though it comes at a rather steep price of $2.60 per piece. i get this every time i visit guoco (:

Pros: delicious food

Cons: pricey, waiting times can be long

Not great

Based on the enthusiastic reviews of others, I decided to go to "AH Lock & Co" for lunch and order the much praised "Hakka Impossible Rice Bowl". Perhaps I caught the wrong chef or the wrong day, but I am not nearly as positive as the others.

First of all, the staff looks overworked. Dirty dishes and cardboard boxes (new supplies?) are piled up inside the customer area. There was water on the floor and the tables clearly had not been cleaned for a while. One person was sleeping in a corner seat. After I received my order, a member joined the sleepy person. This should have been a clue that AH Lock & Co isn't doing too well.

The "Hakka Impossible Rice Bowl" is a lot smaller than the photo suggests (the impossible beat balls are ping pong sized, not tennis ball sized as I expected from the photo). The balls were dry and one had some crust from another dish sticking to it. The sea weed, rice and vegetables tasted like cheap low quality ingredients. Sorry "AH Lock & Co", but others do a lot better for less money in Singapore. For example, a few stalls away is a small Korean bibimpa stand that has 2 vegan options. They are cheaper, tastier and healthier than what "AH Lock & Co" offers.

If you think I visited on the wrong day and got the wrong staff and you want to give "AH Lock & Co" a try, here's how to find them. They are located inside the "Tanjong Pagar" station on the food court 2 levels down. They're somewhat in a corner, but nevertheless easy to find (the photos from the other reviewers make it easy to recognize).

Pros: convenient location

Cons: overworked staff, low quality ingredients, better options nearby

Super Yummy!

Happy Cow brought me here for a random passby of this area. So glad i tried the good food here. Had the Vegetable Rice Bowl for $7.90
The rice bowl dishes feels and tastes like poké with the cool mashed potato and coleslaw. Very good meal. Also added a black sesame pancake and very pleasantly surprised for the large portion for only $1.90.

Pros: Good vegan and vegetarian options, Taste more like a poké bowl, very nice, Generous veg portions

Nice food at reasonable prices

It excites me to see traditional dishes given a modern spin. ahlocknco is well known for their Hakka bowl and yummy vegan pancake (Min Jiang Kueh). They have currently launched their latest vegan bowl

✅The Impossible Hakka Bowl ($11.80)
Ingredient list
- Japanese Rice
- Soy bean soup
- Impossible meatball
- Diced tofu
- Mani Cai
- Long beans
- Seaweed
- Sesame seeds

This impossible hakka bowl uses Japanese short grain rice and the taupok are stuffed with housemade Impossible meatballs (impossible taupok Yong Tau Hu). I thoroughly enjoyed this healthy and delicious vegan bowl.
The diced tofu and veg look deceptively simple but are simply delicious! They use long beans and money vegetable, aka sweet leaf, or mani cai in Chinese or sayur manis in Malay. It is a leafy green that tastes like spinach with a hint of asparagus. Mani cai is one of my fav veg; a bundle of dark green leaves where stems are almost non-existent. For extra punch, you can add their housemade chilli sauce similar to Thai chilli with appetising notes of sweet and sour.

Also featured are their veggie bowls with similar contents without the impossible meatballs, added coleslaw which contain dairy so do replace with other veggies if you want a vegan version. Top up a dollar only for thunder tea soup, min jiang kueh, matcha pudding homemade potato salad or coleslaw.

The vegetables are cooked with alliums by default. If you make a special request, they can cook the veg on the spot separately without alliums during off peak. That is excellent service!

Next, their signature Vegan pancake (Min Jiang Kueh) is one of the best I've tasted. We have tried their Charcoal coconut, Green tea red bean and Original peanut. Their peanut sauce is super rich and hits a perfect balance of saltiness and a hint of sweetness. The texture has a satisfying bite and chewiness.

We also tried their matcha pudding (Eggfree but contains dairy) which is smooth in texture and not too sweet.

There is also free flow of unsweeten ice green tea for us to enjoy.

Overall an excellent vegan option with healthy mains, vegan snacks and free flow tea, all in one.
