Really tasty food, great people - Edit
Walking in we were directed to scan the menu and then sit wherever we wanted. We were first given a paper drinks menu, and later a paper food menu. The owners were very helpful pointing out vegan/ vegetarian items and asking if we wanted spicy, liked peanuts, basically they walked us through a great order. I ended up with a peanut soup plantain fufu which was a solid meal, along with a side of plantains with sauce. Others had spicy cabbage dishes and Jollof Rice, along with Ginger drinks.

Exotic food with delicious and unique flavors - Edit
My recent experience with The African Grill and Bar was excellent. When I arrived to pickup my order, Adjuwe the owner of this small family-owned place greeted me at the front counter. I'm fairly new to African food, so I needed a little advance coaching to choose wisely. The spices, textures and flavors of the items I enjoyed were all unique, and everything was very fresh tasting. I tried three main dish items, including the vegetarian Chakalaka stew which featured garbanzos and veggies, the vegetarian cabbage stew which was a bit spicier, and the "pounded yam" vegetarian fufu dish which included okra soup. The side dishes I chose were plantains and rice. The "wakye" rice was thick and dark, cooked with black eyed peas. The veggie samosa samples included were yummy. Although all menu items have a meat/fish option, and some included egg as an ingredient, I was told that all items on the menu can also be prepared vegan upon request. I can assure you that there are plenty of great vegan menu options available here. If you are also new to African cooking you will find it creative and interesting.
Read moreI loved the names of the food items, especially the "Chakalaka" which brought me images of the background singing in the song from Sly and the Family Stone entitled "I Want to Take You Higher" (boom shakalakalaka, boom shakalakalaka). Fun!
This is excellent comfort food, and now I'm eager to go back again to try some of the other unique menu items. I highly recommend that you try this exotic food as a change from your mundane everyday suburban chain restaurant food...you won't be disappointed! Don't be afraid to ask Adjuwe or her husband for recommendations when placing your order. They are very warm, friendly and helpful.
