Like El Tahrir, Abu Tarek serves only one dish: koshary/kushari which is a traditional Egyptian vegetarian dish made with chickpeas, lentils, tomato sauce, vinegar, fried onions, rice, and noodles (which is almost always vegan). The kushari at Abu Tarek is reportedly vegan, and your only choice when ordering is what size (small or large). Vegans ask about beverages. Open Mon-Sun 7:00am-10:00pm.

The best Koshary in town!

We went there randomly and we got the first portion or Koshary with something to drink. We only paid one euro and it was AMZING. The Koshary is a mixture that contains check peas, lentils, pasta and rice and the tomato 🍅 sauce they make is AMAZING. They also give you spicy oils and something to drink.
The place is so authentic and full of locals!

Best Koshari in Cairo

The best Koshari I had so far in Cairo. It is really lovely and damn cheap!
20-50 EGP depending on the dish size (small, medium, large).

Pros: Cheap, Tasty

Best Koshary in town

I ate the best Koshary that I ever had here. Also, the service is really good and fast. They prepare the sauces and everything for you if you wish to. The restaurant has three floors to sit and dine. You get one medium sized Koshary for 25 EP.

Excellent koshary

Abou Terek only serves one dish: koshary − but it does it excellently, so excellently that the restaurant stretches to at least three and possibly more floors. It's cheap, it's tasty, it fills you up and it's all done with a minimum of fuss.

Koshari Place

The food here is a classic vegan Egyptian dish. Affordable and filled with locals. Good food. When I went there the staff was rude and tried to cheat us. Look out for getting the right price.

Pros: Vegan meals, Affordable

Cons: Rude staff

Carb it up!

Koshari- While this sounds like an odd combination of carbs on carbs, it really is delicious. Spaghetti, small round macaroni bits, rice, brown lentils with a tomato sauce and crispy fried onions. Add vinegar/garlic and hot sauce.
Keep me full for may hours.
There is a take away section down stairs, just head upstairs and find a spot to sit.

Delicious and cheap

My first day in Egypt and tried this place. Service is hit and miss but the food is absolutely delicious. A medium size was big and filled me up for hours.

So delicious!

This is the first time I've ever had koshary so I can't compare it to others. But I hope they're all this good! I ordered it through the Glovo food delivery service. It came with a bottle of garlic tomato sauce. The price is so low and it was so delicious I definitely have to have it again before I leave Cairo.

Good but not amazing

I had heard so much about this place, so many tourists said it was the best koshary so I went there with really high expectations and it wasn't THAT good but still decent. The decor is really cold though, I prefer smaller cozier places.

Pros: Affordable, Easy for ordering!

Cons: Crowded area

Super Yummy

This place is great, bumping with local and Egyptians, we went on a sunday night and was full house and felt very authentic, we were some of the only Europeans. It was cheap AF. AND NON SMOKING.

Pros: cheap, fast, tasty

Cons: waiters are pushy *but honest

Very tasty meal and cheap.

Just went there and the koshari is very tasty. I took a medium one and I paid 25 Egyptians pounds which is nothing for a meal like that.

Cons: Cheap

Tasty Energy

There isn't a surfeit of choices expressly for vegetarians/vegans in Cairo, but all things considered this is a great one. It's simple, fast, tasty, extremely filling, and cheap. And it's in Cairo!!

I went a couple of times for lunch during my visit to Egypt and it definitely sets you up for the rest of the day. Plus it's kind of a landmark, so be sure to go.

Pros: Tasty, Inexpensive, It's in Egypt.

cheap and tasty

This is a great restaurant if you're looking for somewhere cheap, with quick service. The kushari is delicious and filling. You add your own garlic and chilli to the tomato sauce, so it's up to you how much kick the meal has.
The choice is big kushari or small kushari - but at least there's no time wasted poring over a menu!
The central location makes this really handy, but be warned - it closes for the whole of Ramadan.

Pros: very cheap, filling meal, non-smoking

Cons: closed for whole of Ramadan

A lively & popular kushari joint in central Cairo

Opinions are divided as to whether Abu Tarek or its nearby rival, El Tahrir, makes the best kushari in Cairo, but either way you're in for an authentic treat. It's best to arrive hungry, as kushari is quite filling (and can feel a little heavy for some). If in doubt, start with a small order.

Pros: tasty, filling, cheap

Cons: only one dish available
