Good, spicy South Indian food

English below👇

36spices is located in the Noge district of Yokohama, less than 5 minutes from Sakuragicho station.

Unlike most Indian restaurants in Japan, 36spices specializes in southern Indian cuisine. We decided to let our Indian friend do the ordering, and here’s what she chose for us:

Aloo bonda — basically a fried ball with potato curry inside.

Vada— like a spicy doughnut. Came with coconut and peanut chutney as dipping sauces.

Sambar — lentil soup with veggies

Uttapam— looks like a pizza, flavor-wise it reminded me of a Korean chijimi.

Masala dosa — I suppose this is the Indian equivalent of a burrito. You’re given thin bread and filling, and you can eat it however you want, together or separately.

Everything was good, and our friend seemed to approve of its authenticity. It was also pretty spicy! They can make it mild for you if you prefer, though. Our total came to 2000 yen per person for a generous amount of food.

The inside of the restaurant is a little dingy and rundown, but the service was friendly and the food was good. Also, they run the small Indian grocer next door, Indian Spice Market. Recommended.

Oh, and I should add that apparently this place had been listed on Happy Cow before, but it was removed because of reports of cross-contamination. For what it’s worth, we went as a group of eight vegans, two of whom were Indian, and all the food seemed okay to us. Maybe they learned from their mistake.

Great food

36 Spices serves excellent food with great flavour, and as a vegan in Yokohama it is one of two restaurants I eat at regularly. I'm not sure about the 36, but they sure know their spices. The waiter and chefs are friendly and helpful, but as stated in the listing, it's important (for vegans) to explain that we don't want milk/cream etc, but then the waiter and/or Indian chefs will make sure the meal is vegan - options include aloo gobi, chana masala and a few others. The spicy salad is, well, spicy, but delicious. It seems to do a thriving trade, mostly as take-out and delivery, so decor is simple and occasionally all tables are taken. And if they are busy it can also take a long time to get your meal. All up, this place is a nice alternative to Sitar, but not as comfortable or convenient.

Pros: great tasting food

Cons: may be difficult to find without GPS, sometimes long waits for food
