I am sorry to hear this story. Some will be reassured or even heartened to know that there are only one or two nonvegetarian items. The nonvegetarian items are listed on the "Specials" board. Of course, this policy may change; one should probably ask to make certain. I do not recall them using fake (or faux) meats or seafood, so if they are mentioned, I am afraid they are likely indeed to be actual meat. On the other hand, I find they can often substitute with vegan cheese on request in dishes that have regular cheese. Lasagnes on the Specials board for example are an exception in my experience, as they are pre-baked with dairy cheese. On the other hand, I have often requested substitutions in their burrito dishes, which are made to order, of course. One drawback of the restaurant is that one does have to ask sometimes to clarify what is vegan or vegetarian. But the staff are usually excellent about answering or finding out the answer from the kitchen. By the way, one reason it might make sense for them to offer one or two meat or fish alternatives is that the cafe is the site of some concerts and events that draw in diners from the entire local community and beyond--for example, chess night. Of course, not all will agree with this justification. I hope this is of help to you after an obviously disappointing experience.
