There are some foods that will take you right back to your childhood or to a special moment in your life, and for me it’s hot dogs cooked in cola. Sometimes people say funny things to me like, “Colombians eat some weird foods or combine ingredients that you would not think could work together, but then you try them and they are really tasty!” This recipe for hot dogs in cola is one of those examples. Another is sliding a banana into your hot soup—I know it sounds strange but it’s so delicious! (Psst… give the “banana sliding” a try and let me know what you think.)

I used to eat hot dogs in cola back in Colombia and it brings me fond memories of special occasions with friends or new friends to be made. (In Colombia it’s not unusual to invite strangers to a party or event, just because Colombians are friendly.) This recipe is super easy and a delicious snack to share with friends, and now that we are so close to game day, why not have them for this special occasion?

I wanted to share with you my vegan version of this recipe. I love to cook and I have veganized many family recipes. Hot dogs in cola is a great idea for those who are curious about “weird Colombian food”!

HOT DOGS IN COLA

Ingredients:
– Vegan hot dogs. I make two—one for my husband and one for myself.
– One can of cola
– One tablespoon of ketchup
– One tablespoon of hot sauce. I used yellow hot sauce, but you can use one that you already have in your pantry.
– One mashed garlic clove
– Olive oil
– Pinch of salt and pepper

Directions:
1. Preheat a medium size saucepan to medium heat. Pour in a little bit of olive oil. Add mashed garlic and sauté for one minute.
2. Cut the vegan hot dogs into fingertip-sized pieces and add them to the oil for one more minute.
3. Add one can of cola, and a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.
4. Then add a tablespoon of ketchup and also a tablespoon of any hot sauce you have (I used yellow hot pepper). Mix everything and let it cook for 30 to 40 minutes on medium heat, until it’s thick and syrupy.
5. Garnish with dried chives, serve in a bowl and use toothpicks to grab them.

Yummy! You are going to love these—they are sweet, a bit spicy, and savory.
