World Vegan Day 2015 has come and gone. It was celebrated in Hong Kong with the Meat Free Hong Kong meetup group enjoying a fabulous, fabulous, fabulous hot pot meal at the city’s Pure Veggie House.
HK has 7+ million people and 200+ all vegetarian restaurants. It’s thus maybe slightly surprising that so few of those vego restaurants purport to be 100% vegan. This is thus a quick run down of HK’s all vegan restaurants as at Novemver 2015. Since Pure Veggie House are already mentioned they lead us into the listings. After that the restaurants are listed alphabetically. For whichever of these places you try… enjoy!
Pure Veggie House (food pic above) – Much of their food comes from their organic farm. No use of MSG, artificial colour nor five spice. It is also Buddhist friendly with no use of garlic, leek, onion, scallion nor shallot. Pure Veggie House was listed by The Daily Meal at 18 in their 2015 list of the world’s best vegetarian restaurants. Nearest MTR station – Admiralty.
Ah Por Tofu Fa – This lady above has followed the same business model for donkeys years; Sell tofu dessert and soya milk at weekends and on public holidays until stock runs out. The location on the Lamma Island Family Walk means she is on to a sure fire winner. A Lamma Island institution. Nearest ferry terminal – Yung Shue Wan.
CS Vegan (food pic above) – This Buddhist run place is another small & budget-friendly joint. 48 HKD lunch and 68 HKD dinner for their simple & wholesome all you can eat buffet is a contender for the best deal in town. They recently migrated from Fortress Hill to bigger premises of 35 seats. Nearest MTR – Tin Hau.
Green Fresh – Green Fresh carry the flag for all vegan food in the New Territories. Imagine a setup similar to Loving Hut and you’ll be in the right ball park. Nearest MTR – Tsuen Wan or Tsuen Wan West.
GreenWoods (above) – These guys are torch bearers in bringing vegan organic raw food to HK. Green by name and green by decor. Very contemporary food. Despite the plethora of vego restaurants nearby in TST this is the only one currently reported as all vegan. Nearest MTR – Tsim Sha Tsui.
Kan Kee – Updated – no longer considered all vegan.
Light Radiant Food – Updated – Closed.
Lock Cha Tea House (above) – Dim sum is the name of the game here aimed at the pricier end of the market. As well as enjoyable food the location in Hong Kong Park is one of HK’s best. Nearest MTR – Admiralty.
Loving Hut (food pic above) – You know what you will get anywhere globally with the world’s most franchised vegetarian restaurant chain. Tasty & affordable eats, fast food style. The 48 HKD lunch and 58 HKD dinner set menu in Wan Chai is another of HK’s best value contenders. There are two branches in HK. Nearest MTRs – Kowloon Bay or Wan Chai.
Mana! Raw – (food pic above) – Updated – Closed.
Popular Vegetarian – Updated – Closed.
Rawsoever (above) – Rawsoever is another relative newcomer. Managed by a former protégée of GreenWoods, it’s all raw food as the name suggests. 14 seats make it among the smallest in our list. Like Ah Por Tofu Fa the location is on the beautiful Lamma Island. Lamma is a relaxing 25 minute boat trip from Central Ferry Terminal. Ferries are regular to Yung Shue Wan on Lamma.
Soland (above) – A small setup in what looks like a converted apartment. No microwave, pan-fried, deep-fried, stir-fried, MSG, egg, milk, mushroom, nor corn starch. The lady quietly offers a simple & healthy set meal of the day. Soup, main & a drink at 55 bucks HK is great value. Soland has a commendable food waste avoidance policy with a set amount of food each day. Please book in advance. Otherwise if you just show up & there isn’t enough food for you, without fuss you’ll be declined a seat. The earth comes first at this place. Some people don’t like that. Why not, surely it’s a brilliant way of thinking? Nearest MTR – Central.
Thai Vegetarian Food – Bang in the heart of the Thai community in Kowloon City and with Thai restaurants galore nearby. This though is the only one that is all vego. Indeed Thai Vegetarian Food could justifiably rename their restaurant Thai Vegan Food. The ethnicity of the food differentiates it completely from any of the other all vegan restaurants in HK. Nearest MTR – Lok Fu.
