Thanks to you and all HappyCow visitors during Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving, a family feasting holiday celebrated in the United States, centered historically (and unfortunately) around a large roasted turkey, is happening soon. Vegans and vegetarians work hard to introduce their loved ones to compassionate veg* options, and are often challenged to survive a carnivore-centric holiday socially with family and friends. You can use HappyCow to find a restaurant with like minded people, or to pick up food and bring it to your Thanksgiving get together. Here are some Los Angeles restaurants featured on HappyCow that are offering Thanksgiving meals this year, just to give you an idea of what vegans eat at Thanksgiving. Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? And if so, what’s your favorite veg* dish? Green Earth Vegan, Pasadena I’ve already eaten a delicious slice of vegan pumpkin cheesecake from Green Earth Vegan. Don’t miss their holiday feast! Their Thanksgiving will be served from November 26-30. Call them for details. Real Food Daily, Multiple Locations Real Food Daily has several locations, including Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Pasadena, and one at the Los Angeles Airport Terminal 4 (first vegan restaurant at a major airport). Visit RFD’s website and download the pdf with the 21st annual […]

This past week there have been a slew of local vegan events near where I live in Northeast Los Angeles. I’m not sure if there are always this many awesome things going on or if I just started looking at the right time. Unfortunately I did not hear about Mohawk Bend‘s Authors Worth Celebrating event with Isa Chandra Moskowitz until after the fact, though I would have loved to have attended. Actually, the knowledge of the event gained from a friend’s tweets spurred my search for similar vegan events in Los Angeles, leading me to discover The Church of Seitan at Verdugo Bar. No devil worshipping here, this name is merely a clever play on words (which reminds me of the similarly witty t-shirt Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler can be seen wearing in an interview about being vegetarian). For those who are unaware, Seitan is a “wheat meat,” made from gluten and often used in vegan recipes as a source of protein and texture in lieu of meat from animals. So when Sunday rolled around I was pretty psyched to check out this monthly event. Knowing I would be consuming a fair amount of beers ($2 off draft 3-7pm) and vegan treats I began my day with a run through the hills.

I’ve been to vegan festivals and conferences across the nation as both an attendee and a speaker. You can find them in almost every large city in the country and they continue to grow! Vegan festivals are even in Texas of all places! The last one I attended and spoke at was the 2nd Annual Texas VegFest in Austin where I currently live. Austin is pretty hip and progressive with a host of vegetarian and vegan restaurants and veg organizations. I find it to be one of the most fun cities to live in as a vegan and I had the most amazing time at the VegFest . They had over 5,000 people come! Other amazing festivals I’ve been to include the Texas State Veggie Fair, NYC Vegetarian Food Fest, Portland VegFest, Vida Vegan Con, World Peace & Yoga Jubilee, and the Taste of Health cruise. They are all unique but they have a few very important things in common. The Food This is a huge draw for any festival, especially one meant for vegans. We LOVE food! If you are putting on a festival you need to make sure you have plenty of food vendors with a variety of […]

Vegan bake sales combine a time-honored, well-liked tradition with vegan outreach. They’re a fun and effective way to raise funds, introduce the public to delicious vegan food, and—in many cases—engage in productive discussions about vegan diets and broader vegan issues.

The Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale (WVBS) takes the vegan bake sale concept further by having a large number of bake sales during the same short time period-–two weekends and the weekdays in between. This magnifies the power and fun of the bake sales:
