Summer of Love Revisited – 1st “Annual?” Vegan Earth Day!!

Once upon a time… a long long time ago, there were humans known as hippies. Flowers in their long flowing hair. Women dressed in long flowing skirts. Music in their heads. On June 21, 2009 the hippies made a comeback… to Woodland Hills!

Just Chillin' on a Sunday Afternoon

Just Chillin' on a Sunday Afternoon

I will set the scene for you:  Pierce College campus. Huge shade trees on a sunny day. Music by a myriad of bands (my favorite being The Luminaries – so much soul!!). Yummy vegan food. Yummy vegan products for sale. A variety of films showing all day (I watched ‘Simply Raw’). Thought-provoking speakers, including Bob Linden – creator of the event.

There were children and adults of all ages with one commonality:  the healthy vegan lifestyle.

Just a few of the vendors!!

Kudos to Bob and all that helped coordinate this event. A lot of hard work and time went into it and they all deserve a huge round of applause.

Will this become an annual event? Only time will tell. If there is one next year I hope to see more of you at the Summer of Love Revisited!!

I went to the vegan earth day and it was a well planned, well executed, fun, celebratory, visually appealling. The music was world class, and the people that were tabling, supporting animals and just there to enjoy were delightful. My only disappointment was the small amount of people attending compared to similar festival type events in the area. Of course it was the first one and people will be talking about it so next year should attract more people. I wonder though, even though I am a vegan and completely supportive of the lifestyle, if some people or many people may be still put off by the word “vegan”. Of course had they come by they would have had an eye (and tastebud) opening experience – but so many did not come. Perhaps what the festival is called could be reworked a little bit. Of course still being true to the vegan idea, but maybe calling it “animal lovers earth day” or something along those lines would draw more people who would then appreciate and enjoy all that concept has to offer? At any rate Kudos! to all the people who must have worked very very hard to put it together and please keep going. I promise to attend next year and bring more friends. Thank you!
