If you live in a large urban area, there will most likely be places where there is ample pedestrian traffic. This is an untapped mine for getting out the word about the benefits of vegetarianism. You can order a stack of Vegetarian Starter Guides from a pro-vegetarian organization, take them to a busy street corner one morning or afternoon (preferably during rush hour), maybe with a friend or two, and start handing out guides to passersby. Dress “normally”—jeans and a neat shirt will do, nothing with an extreme message—to encourage passersby to stop. As people pass by, offer them a guide, smile, and speak warmly. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, you can approach people to hand them the guide.
In Washington, DC, leafleters also hand out small thin recipe booklets and local restaurant guides published by a local pro-vegetarian group. People love recipes and dining guides, and it’s quite easy getting those into people’s hands. If people have simple animal-friendly recipes they can make and they know where to get a good veg*an meal, that makes it easier for people to reduce their consumption of animal products. Knowing there are delicious vegan options out there, and that being vegan doesn’t mean denial removes a stumbling block. But if you don’t have either to hand out, simple vegetarian starter guides are adequate to get the message across.
After you and your friends have handed out all the leaflets, go out and treat yourselves to a well-deserved vegan dinner. Then decide when and where you go leafleting next time. Leafleting is a simple, effective way to get the vegetarian message across to large numbers of people in a relatively short amount of time—and it’s great fun, too!
